Tire size and clearance issue

mattmf01
Working on a project bike. Whats the rule on the rear tire for the stock 16 inch rime? Fender space isnt a problem for me as i have an over sized fender and am going to replace it to mach whatever size tire i get but, what is the widest tire i can put on a stock rim with alittle over 9 inches of room. Worried about the chain rubbing on the tire and not enough clearance.

The 77-78 engines had the sprockets off set to the outside 10mm, or 3/8" further out then the 69-76 engines. I'm not sure about the 16" tires, but on a 17" you can go 130 with out any problems. I do know that in the old style inch measurements, you could go with a 5.00 tire though.

I got a 5" on a 16" wheel with an early engine. Lots of clearance to the chain. Like Tools said, if you run a 77-78 engine you'd have even more room.
