I'm not sure what you're opinion of a cafe tire is, but I have the Shinko 712's and I'm a big fan. I got mine from motorcycle superstore for around $100 combined (with free shipping, I think)
Here's the link. You can also check out the reviews there.

Pirelli MT 66 Route tires are reasonably priced, virtually ignore tar snakes, cracks, grated bridges, etc., for the first 5,000 miles or so, and then they still handle well on that stuff.  They behave as though they are glued to the road in full rain, riding two-up, with a heavy load of gear on the bike.  I've gotten 10,000+ miles from them so far, with another several thousand likely before I replace them (unless they reach the three-year mark, when the rubber hardens, and they should be replaced due to age alone).  They run around $90 rear, $86 front, from Motorsycle-Superstore.  I may go Darkside on my touring bike, but otherwise, they are all I want to ride on -- they're that good.  I've ridden the MT66's on three bikes:  1983 Kawasaki 440LTD, 1979 Honda CB750K, and a 1993 Kawasaki Voyager XII touring bike (exceptional performance on all three, very different bikes).  YMMV.  Whatever tire you are interested in, be sure to search for reviews of them on the Internet.  Cheers!

I'm with Half Caf on the Shinko 712's. They grip very, very well but they probably won't last as long as the Pirelli's Sgtslag mentioned. I got about 3,000 miles each out of my last two rear 712's . My front has around 6,000 miles on it and will most likely last another 3k miles to finish up with my 3rd rear that's on there now.Just to give you an idea of the mileage they provide. The 712 front tire does have a non-staggered center groove/rain channel that will follow tar snakes some since it is non staggered, but it is barely noticeable and really not an issue at all. Of course, tire wear depends very much on your riding style. Twistys and hard acceleration will eat up tires much faster than highway miles. Usually people wear out rear tires 2:1 to their fronts. I tend to kill rear tires cuz I really like the throttle and my riding buddies are always telling me that my rear is spinning. You could possibly get a lot more miles out of a set of 712's than I do.I've seen reviews where people have gotten 10k miles out of a rear 712 on a Goldwing.Haha,it'll never happen for me.

HalfCaf,how are yours holding up?

Don't know how a tire can make it a Cafe' or not but... + another for Motorcycle-superstore. Orders over $100 get free shipping. Here is their "Tire Finder" that helps you choose what they have in the sizes front and rear. Tire-Finder
I have the Shinko 712's on two bikes now, but no real miles on either of them yet. But if you want a Name Brand for a good price that performs well... the Bridgestone Spitfire is a DAMN GOOD TIRE! Have a set on my GL1100 after many recomendations and am very happy with them. Dual compound gets you a harder center compound for higher milage and softer compound in the shoulders for grip when you want to lean it into the curves. Wet wheather performance is great.

I'm in the market, was thinking Bridgestone.
Isn't that what Honda uses on all their bikes?
Was going with them for that reason.

But, for 100 bucks, these Shinko's are in the running.

Nobody has had any issues with the Shinko's?

When i was in the market and researching my Shinko's I read where they were cast from the old Yokohama molds...
