Titled & Registered my Trailer today!

Cabreco

So today I went to title & register my motorcycle's trailer. Went to DMV where they charged me
$10 for a title,
$18/yr for registration,
$8/yr CITY personal property tax
and $35 for STATE sales & use tax.
So I say: "But I already paid sales tax at the store" Her answer...
"It DUDN'T matter, there's a state minimum of $35 that the state charges on all titles"....
I GOTTA MOVE!

It almost sounds like you live in California.

That sucks! Say, how much is vehicle registration there? I just got the reminder in for my bike and the grand total is $23 for the year (Idaho).
Here in the COMMUNISTWEALTH of Virginia they nickel & dime you for everything. This trailer's registration is $18 per year PLUS $8 of personal property tax which is not THAT bad. As far as the bike goes, both my bikes carry antique plates & collector insurance so IDK what that would cost. The registration was $50 one time fee. Since they are antique I avoid the "$4.10 per each $100 of book value. Which is why I refuse to buy a new ANYTHING here.

That's strange Cabreco. You know I live in VA,too. As far as I know the only trailers that require inspection, titling and therefore personal property taxes, are the ones with trailer brakes. Simple tag trailers dont need any of that. They may have changed something, but it's been like that as long as I've owned trailers. And I've owned alot! Yeah, they all need a tag and ,yeah, the hit ya up for the $35+ sales tax,but if you dont have brakes on that trailer you aren't required to do the rest.

I actually have two non-brake trailers now. Tagged, but no inspection and no PP tax.Ever.

Oh,and FWIW my 24' enclosed racing trailer was only $10/year PP tax and my work trailer is a 14'' enclosed. Both with brakes,of course.

That is where a Bill of Sale saves your butt here. It doesn't matter if what you have, whatever the BOS states as the sale price,That is the new taxable value. The BOS on my '01 Silverado ( 6 years ago)was $1500

Yeah EVERYTHING is now subject to personal property tax, unless you are active military. On the plus point on a $143.99 trailer it should be around $6 and would subsequently drop as the value drops...Oh wait, we have a MINIMUM FEE of $8. So even though the value would incur a TAX of $6 they have a FLOOR amount which they reclassify as a FEE of $8.

Since BOTH my vehicles were bough new, my bill of sale shows original purchase price so they use the NADA book. Bottom line the state of Virginia is a TAX PREDATOR!

Fortunately, the trailer did NOT require inspection but if you want it on the road in needs tags & title. One plus point is they do sell Permant tags for between $70-$100. That's good if you are planning to keep the trailer or plan to live here long term, but not me!

Don't forget PPT is called "CITY USE TAX" each city is different & they also charge a different rate. Hampton Roads is one of the highest.
