I'd like to get my hands on two front rotors for a SOHC. I want to have them thinned and drilled so I have one for my '74 and one for my upcoming cafe project.
Also, I need a rebuildable front caliper just in case mine is bad. (no matter how I adjust it, it will not quit squeaking....I've read this "could" possibly be due to pad contamination, so I have another set of pads on the way to try that out first)
Oh, and still looking for a SOHC frame for my project. Titled pays higher, but I'm willing to gamble on getting a title for one without. Must not be a rusted out useless pos. It must be one I can actually use.
Thanks all. :)

Mark,I have a complete front caliper setup for a SOHC. Arm and all. I even have a new rebuild kit for it. I have not popped the piston out to see what it looks like, though. There were a couple different style bodies on those calipers,so I can put up a pic to see if mine match yours.I have two calipers, not sure what style either is.
I'm about 80% sure I have a spare rotor,too.
I just picked up a 1/4'' cobalt bit to do some rotor drilling myself. I have a few different pdf files I downloaded that have different drill patterns on them. I dont have a way to print them off to actually have the templates,so I'm on a stand still there. If you want I could send you those patterns. Are you planning on drilling them yourself?

|
Sounds good, let me know. I don't really care about the exact style of the caliper, it will be painted, rebuilt, and used on my future cafe build, so I only care that it will look good and function. It's not for my current bike restoration, that caliper works fine....so far. :)
I won't be drilling them myself. I do have the right tungsten carbide drill bits, which are even harder than cobalt, but no drill press yet. Theres a guy on the SOHC forums that does them anywhere from 18 holes to 120 holes and both the straight and spiraled patterns, He even chamfers the holes. For the prices he offers and the turnaround time, it's a good deal.

I was thinking you were wanting to do a dual disc conversion. Thus the need for matching calipers. I'll check it all out when I get in this evening and post what I got.
I haven't opened my cobaly bit yet.I thiought that was the one to use. I remember now you talking about the tungsten bits. Would the cobalt do OK,or should I go ahead and swap it for a tungsten?
|
|
I don't know how hard the rotors are, they're pretty thin so the cobalt will probably be good.

Sounds good.It was only $3.50 for the one bit,so it if dies in a hurry it won't exactly break me :)
Here is what I have. These parts came with my 78K. I was gonna use them for a dual disc conversion on my Cafe, but the calipers dont match one another,so it was a no-go on that idea.
The pads look very useable, but that is up to you. No signs of fluid leakage on to them, scores or grooves.Lots of material left, though there is on very small chip on one puck.Hope it shows in the pic. IT IS STUCK at this point. I didn't have time to mess with it much. I did try a pry bar to push the piston back in to the bore with no success, but I did not want to risk hurting a good set of pads by forcing too awful much.
The pivot on the arm is nice and tight with no slop, which I hear can be a common source of 'clunks' with these brakes.
Rotor appears healthy and apparently never turned.Should be plenty of meat left for you to skim off there.
I dont know how much of a hurry you are in. If you like I can investigate this caliper better Saturday and see if it will free up,and what the piston looks like. Just let me know whatever you want to do!

If Mark does not want it, I will swap, you one that matches yours, for it. I will even tell, you how to move the break line, so that it will match the other one on the other side.

I'm in no hurry. This will be for my cafe project....for which I have not even located the frame and motor! I've got time.
Is the '78 caliper interchangeable with the '69-'76? My only concern would be if it will bolt up. I'm going to be putting too much money into welding in the Gordon frame kit, and some custom paint by some artist and model friends of mine, so I don't want to have to fab up anything on the brakes. I just want to bolt them on. I'm lazy like that.

They should be a direct swap. I know the wheels and the fork slider are all setup with the same rotors and caliper mounting ears. I can mock up some parts lying around and find out for sure, though. Not sure why there are two different style bodies on the calipers.Always wondered about that.
I'll check the fit on the early fork sliders Tools sent me.If that checks out then I'll pop the piston out and have a look-see.

The caliper brackets are different, for the two calipers. However they do mount to the forks the same after 73.

Cool, then I could use the later caliper as long as I got the correct bracket with it. Like I said, it just needs to work, and clean up nice.

Hey Mark, we had a storm blow thru here and ill be without power for possibly 3 days. So I have no air compressor to pop this piston out. 104 degrees and no AC :(. I can't get my laptop to wifi off my phone iether :(. You know what, if I'm gonna be basically camping at home...I oughta just hop on the bike and take a road trip. I do have the very rare opportunity to take the whole next week off...very tempting!

I'm in no hurry, I don't even have the cafe frame yet. I don't care if I don't find one for the next three months, take your time. :)

Dang....first he threatens to ban me...now he's gonna sic the pooch on me. What a guy Well, power is not scheduled to be on until possibly July 7th But I did find a second rotor! I knew I had two of them. All I was able to do was clean up the shop while I had daylight today.Much needed actually.
