Alright, she's almost there. New ignition system is here on Tuesday and after that it's just a little cleaning and a sweet new paint job (Fire Engine Red and Pearl, I'm thinking...) and we're on the road. Thanks to all for the help so far!!!!
I have a buddy that owns a body shop, he's got a couple partial cans of the colors I want and him and I go way back, so I'm getting a sweet deal on the paint job and leaving it to the professionals...plus I will be busy cleaning and polishing up the rest of the bike while they're painting the fenders, tank, and side covers. Is yours going to be ready soon?
NewRider,
I am pretty much done with the mechanical end. Now I need to get it to look half way decent. It's silver with the blue and black striping. I don't know yet whether to stay with the colors or not.
i painted my 79 cb750f myself. it came out pretty good for rattle can and clear coat lol.i just bought a 83 cb900f front fender i about the paint and install.
nice...looks like you stuck with the flat black on the headers, huh? That's what I'm doing with mine, too. Did you use that special high temp. paint? Did you take them off to paint them or just do it right on the bike? Trying to minimize the amount of stuff I have to take off for the paint job...seems a pity to start yanking stuff off when I've spent the entire winter trying to put it on! haha
Ahh, so we're in the same boat (mechanics-good, aesthetics-not so much...) That color combo seems to be a recurring theme. My buddy was showing me some pics of his restoration 2 yrs. ago and silver blue and black were the colors when he started too. I don't know how many of these you are going to see on the road around you, but you may want to jazz it up a bit with your own personal touch. Know anybody with an artistic hand? I'm having my friend Amanda (who is a graphic designer out in Cali) sketch some stuff up for me so I can be sure I'm getting something original. Whatever you decide, good luck! The season is fast approaching...
I took the headers off due to needing new exhaust header gaskets. I did use the high temp flatblack paint. It should be easily done on the bike just take ur time and tape offeverything u can.
My buddy was saying something about having to "bake" the exhaust pipes after that high temp paint goes on, but I would think that turning the bike on and letting it run a bit should heat them up plenty, right?
like i said i had mine off to replace the gaskets. so it was easier for me to paint them while off. i painted them installed them and went for a ride and everything worked out great. the paint looks good and baked on there very well. dont buy the cheap shit. and your buddy is talking about powder coat. looks almost the same but ALOT tougher but you do have to bake that on. hogh temp grill paint and you can even get colors of high temp engine enamel for an automotive store. thats what i used to repaint the motor. it looks almost new now. good luck with everything be sure and send photos when your done
Thanks for the tips, Joe. You know I will be bragging about this as soon as it's done so keep an eye out for new pics. The ignition system is going in tomorrow and I'm hoping and praying it's nice enough out to ride this weekend because it's supposed to rain all next week. (Figures, I've been waiting for good weather for 3 months, and now that it's going to be ready, I still have to wait!! haha). Take care.
