Vin number

maybe73
I found an old cb750 leaning against a house in Minnesota. Took A chance, bought it for $300. Trailered it home to Chicago suburb. Had not run in " three or four " years. Got it running pretty easily, motor was not seized. Now my problem is that it has a Minnesota title that says it's a 1973. Engine serial #cb750-1209980 which is on title and on engine, but according to everywhere I look on internet (even honda corp. in California) that # doesn't exist. But wait there's more. ID plate is gone from neck of frame and same serial # has been hand stamped in its place. I believe its about a 1973 k model, engine and frame, but it has 1976 f (super sport) tank, seat, exhaust and a few other parts where welded on. Does any one know of the practice of assigning a new serial # from a rebuild shop or engine builder? Previous owner has no clue, he didn't even know the difference between K and F models. I am going to try to title in Illinois as a 1973. Hope I don't have a problem.

I checked, and that number does not exist on my serial number chart. Also there should be an "E" right after the "CB 750" in the serial number. I think you just bought some parts, and should scrap that frame!!!!!!!!!

On a 69-78 bike the factory stamped VIN will be in this location and look like this. Does you look similar to this at all? On the opposite side of the neck with be a stamped aluminum plate with the VIN and other vehicle specs on it. It's glued and staked in to the neck with pins.

Hope this helps.

I agree with what u r saying and have thought the same thing. But I have been having good luck so far with it coming together as a winter project. Takes up some garage space, aggravates the wive, so in the spring I will try to title it and see if that goes over with the state. I have only spent a small amount of cash = battery, oil and filter, rode it around my neighborhood and was grinning the hole time. If I can't get a regular title ( don't want a salvage title, people r afraid of them ) I figure that it is a running engine so it is worth parting out and I won't lose any $.

Aluminium plate is gone. I can see remains of " rivets " that held it on. Stamping looks like it was done or re done over old stamp. Some one was good with a welder on other parts of frame, so who knows. They did good work on making f seat hinges and latch fit this frame as well as removing k seat hinges ( I can see cut marks )  The two seats opened opposite of each other. Also they did a good job of making a bracket to fit the f stock exhaust system to this frame. Gauges, wheels, switches, and rest of parts seem to be from k model. Drum brake on rear, disk on front, like k model. ???????? I'm going to try to title it and see what happens. Thanks for your reply.

I agree with TOOLS, I think you should scrap that frame.  It can't be hard to find a good frame to put all of the parts into.

That may be what I have to do. Trying to spend as little $ as possible. This bike is only for grins. I don't plan on restoring or cafe.
