Want to trade front ends...my DOHC for your SOHC

slownugly007
I'm trying to swap my DOHC front end over to a SOHC front end to accomodate different wheels and need the ENTIRE front setup, from triple trees to brakes. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in trading set ups? Mine is an 81F, both calipers are completely rebuilt with new seals, bleeders, pads and I have all new banjo bolts and crush washers. The rotors are still in good shape and I have new fork seals and dust seals, that aren't installed. If anyone's interested let me know and we can work something out.

Sorry. Got teased, huh? I was just pissed at my brakes last night and was gonna tell you to send yours and mine was on the way.

I need to learn patience in a big way.

Haha sorry I couldn't resist. Not sure if you already did or not, but rebuilding my calipers made a world of difference! I know we had talked before about squealing brakes and mine would squeal when I used the brake and even when I didn't.

I thought it was just the pads but after digging further I found that my pistons weren't returning, which was the reason for the constant squeal. When I rebuilt them I used permatexs ultra disc brake caliper lube on just about everything from, seals, pistons, pins and the backing plates on the pads. Even with my super glazed and gouged rear rotor I have no squeaks at all. Also, my new pads had 5 lines cut in the opposed to the 1 that the originals had. Not sure if your are the solid puck style, but maybe a few valleys in the pad would help?

Again not sure if this will help your case but figured I'd pass along my success.

My first reply was in a fit of anger last night. My reply was that I would swap you the front end off the W-B...then I calmed down.

The dead pad adjustment on my bike needs constant attention. I dont know if my pads are wearing down super fast, but if a gap gets in there it rattles and squeals,if i set it too tight it squeals. I carry a 10mm and a flat blade in my tail fairing and usually end up adjusting them roadside quite often. As soon as it squeals I pull over and adjust it. I CANNOT stand that sound

My pads are sanded, cut, chamfered, grooved the whole shabang. I even sprinkled some sacrificial chicken blood on them once. Anything I thought would work. The silicone grease cured my drum squeal, but didn't do any good on the front disc. CRC makes a adhesive type stuff.I think it's called disc brake quiet. It does real good, but I still have to stay on the dead pad adjustment. It gets adjusted more than the chain gets greased!

I tell you what,I have a complete SOHC front end on HaCkJoB. The good sliders were given to me by Tools. If he is cool with it,I can send you that front end and I'll put that money towards whatever ends up on that bike. Of course, the sliders are free to you as they were to me. The rest of it,I have no clue what it's worth and the tubes aren't the best. If you run into a bind at least you know there is a SOHC front end here you can get your hands on.Cheap. I know shipping can be rough, and I'm not looking to make a bunch of scratch on anything.

BTW,you DO have something I want...buuuuut I don't know how attached to it you are...

I don't care if, you swap out the tubes. However I wonder about, you having to adjust the breaks, so much. Are the pads wearing that fast?

I think so.I putting about 200-200 miles a week on the bike. They get adjusted 2 or 3 times a week. They dont look thinner but they are kinda chunking. I dont know whats up really. Not big chunks, but little 1/16 - 1/8 inch divots all over the dead pad.Piston side is fine. It's like the puck material is crumbling off. And these are the Honda pads. I'll pop the Bikemasters back on soon and see if they do better,or if they drive me crazy again. But I'm always crazy so its sorta a non-issue.

Shiny, quick question, did you put any anti-seize compound on the back of your pads? I know from cars that if you don't, that shit squeaks like a MOTHERBANGER!

Okay, off to work on the bike again. In my excitedness, I forgot to tighten down the locknuts around the throttle adjustments. OOPS!
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

I used silicone grease on the backs first. No change. Then I used the CRC stuff. It actually glues the pucks in to place so they cant vibrate/squeal.Worked good. These SS rotors are just so hard and smooth its nearly impossible to eliminate all vibes. There is a simple/cheap cure somewhere.I will find it. It is not 100 mile brake adjustments, either. But in all fairness,I do brake quite hard, quite often. If I go to town and back( 60 miles round trip) I probably jam on the brakes at least a dozen times. You know, blast into a curve,BRAKE!!!,down shift, throttle out...WOO HOO!   I really need to slow down, just cant do it...its a sickness.

   Hey Ribs
Do your brakes have front N rear clip that goes across and pads kind of hang on them ,then the outside pad have ac"C" shape bowed that goes to outside?think I got A pic, cause I lost 1,once. those go on the ends before pad goes on them.

No clips on mine, bud. The one just sits against the piston, the dead side is held in place with a cotter pin.

Wait, you don't have ANY sort of clip? There's one that goes here:

Assembled on the caliper:

This keeps the pads separate from the piston. You can actually see it move the pads back n forth, so when the brake piston releases then it pushes the piston off the rotor.

Man, if you don't have that... I can sympathize with your predicament.

I see your green dot. Fork pics up in a bit...

Ah,you got the clue! ...man,I just like lowballed

Have you decided which wheels you wanna go with on the rear yet?Disc or drum?

Here is the rust on the tubes. There is no rust where the seal slide,so its just cosmetic.
