We would need the serial# to answer this question, and pictures would help.

If it is an sohc, it cannot be a 79. If it is dohc, it cannot be 78. Either way, there is a number on the engine, get that and we can tell you the year of engine. There is a number on the frame too, that will say the year the bike model is from.
The frame and engine will not match, except for the very early sohc models.

Hi thanks for the reply, well, I have been looking all over the engine but could not find an engine number anywhere, I have got the frame number which is .. RC 01-2006485. Thanks again.

Hi, one more bit of information, I have just realised that I can"t count, its a 1976-1977 model. Does that help at all. thanks.

That frame# does not match any 77-78 or any other SOHC model that I know of.

RC01 means '79-'84 CB750. You may even have a Nighthawk. Does the bike have any decals left on it? Should say right on the side cover if it's a K,C,F (super Sport) or a LTD or something.
On the round cover on the left side of the engine it should say DOHC.
Just incase something has been swapped around...
-If your valve cover looks like an "H" it's a DOHC engine.
-If your valve cover says "OHC'' the engine is a SOHC.
-If your swingarm is stamped looking it's a SOHC piece.
- It your swingarm is tubular it's a DOHC piece.
SOHC engine numbers are on top of the lower part of the engine, directly above your shifter. I can't recall where they put the numbers on the DOHC engines. Sorry

Just got hold of the original registration documents, this tells me that its a 1979 dohc. The engine number is RCO1E2006667. So is this a K2. Many thanks for all your replys.

No it would not. A K-2 would be a SOHC manufactured in late 1971 to late 1972.
