so [as some may recall] the problem on my 80 C was that it wouldn't start hot. it would start cold no problem but once it warmed up that was it -- no go. if I turned the thing off it would turn over like crazy on restart but would not catch until it cooled down -- 20 minutes or more usually.
stored the bike at my daughter's over the winter. and not that I'm blaming the guy, but my son in law was supposed to keep an eye on the battery and give it a trickle charge. he did not. in fact, the battery froze and cracked.
got the replacement yesterday and made it out to their place today. a bit of a hard crank but it finally caught, and I had a great ride home. turned it off, waited 2 minutes, turned the key and it started immediately. if that's it and it wasn't starter bushings or something electrical I'm a happy camper . . . though I wish I'da discovered it last year!
