You have a few options here. One of the most common is the Dyna-s. It uses the stock coils or after market and replaces the points plate but keeps the stock advancer.
There is also a dyna 2000, it is a somewhat programmable version.
There is a boyer bransdon ( I think that is the name)
A couple other less known models(cant think of them)
There is also a couple models made by cyclex, one of which is an optical system that is supposed to work very well.
If you have the stock motor, the dyna-s is the most common. I have one and it has worked great. Some people have had them go out but I am not sure why. I think problems are mitigated if you stick with 5 ohm coils.

If you have a mildly hopped up engine, the S works there too but for a hotter engine, a dyna 2000 or the cyclex system would be much better.

Well a search of "coils" here will pull up a lot of hits with different info. Bottom line is that your best choice is to get a dual firing, 5 ohm coil. partsnmore.com has them and many other sites do to. As for wires, the plug caps already have a 5k ohm resistance so the wires should be NON suppression.

Basically wires with no resistance. Your standard auto plug wires are a suppression style. Ours would be a solid core if my terminology is correct.

I wouldnt say your nutts you sound like a biker to me. I have several old bikes and enjoy working on them.
The one i like the most is my Supersport. It needs the most work BUT it runs better than the others.
