air cleaner box cover

fighterDaz
Hi, my 82 DOHC had no end on its air cleaner box, so I decided to make one. should it have holes in it to allow air into the box or a solid plate ? It looks like a solid plate in the manual, but never having seen one I am guessing. If it should have holes in it, my home made one will make the mixture to rich. Darren.

Wait, do you mean the box itself, or the plate that you remove to gain access to the filter?
I'm talking about the plate...

The plate you remove to get to the filter. I think it should not have holes because the air intake is under the seat.

Take a look at the design of the air box, itself, and how the filter fits, and how air flows through the filter, to the carbs.  You should see that air flows from the back side, beneath the seat.  You should also see that the air flow won't matter which direction it comes from, as the filter is oval shaped.  The plate did not have louvers in it, from the factory; if you add louvers, it will not affect the air flow, except to possibly add a small amount of additional air flow -- not enough to matter.  It will be easier to make a solid plate, but if you want to take the trouble to add louvers, go ahead.  Cheers!
