If it touched metal/frame it would arc. Did it touch metal? When installing a battery, you should always connect the positive, and then the negative. When removing a battery you do just the opposite. Remove the negative first, and then the positive. Doing it this way, you will not make an arc welder out of your wrench it hit metal while installing/removing the positive cable.
