battery/electrical problem

cru
new to the site and new to riding as well. just bought a 1977 CB750....looks great, but it's dying on me. I put in a brand new battery and it didn't solve my problem. after about 5 min of riding, maybe less, it will simply stop running, and will not restart. I can tell this is a charge problem from the headlight nearly going out. and this is directly after a full charge. any help would be really appreciated, i'd really like to get out on the road! thanks.

Are you saying that the battery is totally dead? The electric starter will not crank the engine? Even if the battery is not charging; it should run, for several hours on a charge. I would start with the regulator. You can download the factory service manual from the manual section at the top of the home page here, for free. It has very good detailed instructions on checking/testing the charging system.

nearly totally dead, no electrical start....maybe 30% of the time I can kick start, but then dies again shortly after. ill check out the manual in the morning. thanks.

I also need to change the rear tire, but I have a single side kickstand.... anybody have suggestions on doing this without buying a stand? can I just put it up on a block without damaging it?

update: bike rode fine for 212 miles....now  a new problem. after about 200 miles a loud noise developed coming from inside the stator case. sounds like a cassette tape being rewound.  eventually it starts to lurch and power seems to fade in and out. also right before the final ""die" the rpms go nuts. sitting at a stop light in neutral they will eraticly rev between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. any advice? has anyone else experienced similar problems?  thanks, cru
