carb holder clamps

Buster
I've got a 1972 honda cb750k2.  I'm using a good quality 1/2 inch wide hose clamp on the carb holders.  When I attempt to sych the carbs, I can only get 10 inches of vacume at idle, and that's with the adjusting screws all the way to the top.  The idle is also erratic, RPM up and down.  Could the hose clamps I'm using be the cause of the problem.  The OEM are much more narrow (about half the size of the clamps I'm using now)?  I think maybe I'm not getting a good seal.

Welcome to the forum. It does sound like, you are not getting a good seal. However I have known of hose clamps being used with out any problems. Have, you checked the rubber boots? They might be cracked, or hard and not sealing.

I wonder, would it be ok to use a non-voc sealing agent such as silicone grease? i know I wouldn't use RTV or anything like that. I also know with good condition flexible boots, it wouldn't be needed at all.

Are you sure the boots are the right ones?  Do they fit loose?

Mine are super tight and its fairly difficult to slide the carbs into them, almost impossible without using soap as a lube.  Mine are old and hard though.

I used some S.S. clamps also,YOU need to be sure that were the tightening screw is that it don't push up against anything on the other end,Was(tricky) just barely enough room for mine but does work.
