chain and sprocket question

shultz_1978
I was cleaning my sprocket chain guard / cover today and found this. It is not all the way through, but I don't want the see it get worse.

The bike has a 630 chain on it that I will be replacing with new chain and sprockets. So the question is should I stay with the 630 chain like it has or switch?

My other bike has a 630 chain on it with no problems. Maybe the PO has a chain come off or some thing.

Also if I remember right is it the smaller rear sprocket the lower r's at higher speeds. Right?

Any input would be appreciated.

You are right about the rear sprocket and the RPMs. However I would strongly recommend an O-ringed 530 chain. The 530 chains today are stronger then the 630 chains from 30 years ago.

I'm with Tools. And, there is a huge difference in drag between an o-ring chain and a non o-ring chain. I've had both. I can only imagine the extra drag a 630 o-ring would create!

Oh,thanks for the tip

Thanks gentalmen that is kind of what I was thinking. Any good sets come to mind let me know.

I really don't need to go smaller on my rear sprocket but it would be nice to.

I'm real happy with the Bikemaster chains I've been using lately. I was killing chains pretty bad,but the 2 I have now are doing real good. Just be sure to get the 9600 lb tensile.

What size front gear is on the bike now,If I was to put on A 16T(1977 F2) it would block the rear top screw,(Tryed with cover off, will adapt for during summer, So I just stayed with the 15 witch is 1T bigger from stk.
Yes ,A 630 chain from 30+ years ago witch would be A stk.Honda chain,My 630 chain is / bought new 3 months ago,Sure is nice yes bigger and lots stronger and lasting then most any other, heavy bastard Not heading to track but Lots 0f miles.1 flat on adjuster bolt tighter since new over 2Kmiles.
