Malware bytes is a free replacement for Norton. Remove Norton, run Malware Bytes instead.

The free version of Malwarebytes alone is not a free replacement for Norton, it is basically just a scanner whereas Norton is supposed to have "real-time" protection to stop malicious software from entering the computer to begin with, not to just get rid of them upon scanning the computer.
Just look at the product features of the two and you can see that Malwarebytes free is not a total replacement for Norton, period.

That part about the real time protection is what caught my eye when I was downloading the Malwarebytes. So should I just replace Norton with AVG,or purchase the upgraded version of Malwarebytes?
Oh,and my computer is noticeably faster now with that virus gone.

The free version of Malwarebytes is basically just a scanner, it doesn't block things from entering the computer. AVG free will block things and is an Antivirus, and Spybot Search and Destroy is an Anti-Spyware program that is not only a scanner, but will beef up your firewall and help stop things from getting into your computer.
Here is a link for AVG download http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition-2012/3000-2239_4-10320142.htmlHere is a link for Spybot Search and Destroy http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.htmlYou don't have to scan all the time with each one of these programs, basically just scan with AVG and keep Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy up to date. You only really need to scan with the other programs for the first initial scan and when and if you think your computer might be infected.
Also, just because Malwarebytes only detected and removed 1 trojan does not mean there was only 1 infection, sometimes after removing 1 you can run the same scanner again and it will find more that were hidden deaper by the previously removed infection, which is why it is a good idea to run more than one program to make sure the infections are completely whiped out.
Remove Norton if you are going to run these programs otherwise they will conflict with each other and will make the computer slow and unstable. My experience says that Norton is a waste of money and it slows your computer down more than you think because I am sure your computer came with it and you have never run it without it. I have removed many a virus before that Norton has missed, and after I fix the computer I delete, put these free programs on, and it ends up increasing the speed as well.
Another great program to run to help speed up the computer and to help get rid of the registry entries Norton will leave behind after deleting it is CCleaner http://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/3000-18512_4-10315544.htmlIt is a simple program to operate and will clean out unused or broken registry entries, and will also clean up unused files that your web browser and other programs leave behind and don't use, and will not delete things you need unless you tell it to.
Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to be as helpful and informative as I can without actually being there to walk you through it. You have my email if you have any questions Shiny, and if you run into a snag I'll give you my phone # to help you through it.
Good Luck!
I really appreciate all of this info. I am still deciphering/translating it !LOL. Looks I need to do some computer maintenance. Chances are i will be bothering either you or CDA with this issue.Lets just see if I can figure it out on my own first.....

Sorry shiny, basically its up to you if you would rather have a free fix or a paid for one.
If you have money than the full version of malwarebytes would be the way to go.
If you want free then go with both AVG free and Malwarebytes free as a minimum.
I know Cdaiscool said not to use them both at the same time, I have both of them on my computer and have no issues between the two. I think he meant don't run both scanners at the same time, which you don't want to run multiple scans at once because any program like these will conflict when scanning at the same time.
Oh, and HTC is good, the Inspire is a little less powerful than the newer ones though, but my girlfriend has the HTC Thunderbolt and that thing is a friggin workhorse. Android definately better than the Iphone, and a lot cheaper to buy and fix if it gets broken.

thanks, may go HTC, was going to do so 3 years ago but they quit making the phone I was after so went with Nokia instead. much as I like the thing I have no won't go Nokia again, looks like they are going to lose out on the North American market.
Blackberry? going tubular so no thanks, though I have friends that work for the company.
Shiny: don't run 2 antivirus programs at the same time. totally delete Norton then download AVG free [not AVG trial] and use it as you e-mail scanner. have malawarebytes handy and run it weekly if you want, but no need to keep it running while AVG is.
and yes, you get a bit more with the paid versions, but the free ones are enough imo.

Ok,I'm making time to sort all of this out today. I have the AVG ready to go,but how do i remove Norton? Is it as simple as deleting it to the recycle bin? I wouldnt think so. I cant see how to remove it,but I can see where to disable it. But damn, when you disable it it throws up so many "Caution!:Your Unprotected" messages you can't use the computer around it. Btw this sucks. I should be put riding :(

I did in fact uninstall Norton. So thats all good.I'll turn the Windows defender on...when I find it.
Thank you so much for your help.
You still need a set of super bike bars?
|
|
No problem shiny, you always helping me so am more than happy to return the favor. Do you have windows 7 for operating system? if so to turn on windows defender just click on the flag that's down in the bottom right corner of the toolbar where the volume and stuff all is, then choose "open action center" and there should be something in red saying "turn on windows defender".
If you have Vista then I am sorry and will pray for you... lol.
If you have XP go into the control panel and there should be something about security in there... been a while since I dealt with XP...
And actually yeah, I could still use a set of superbike handlebars as my dad is going to help me kong the frame on my bike so I can sit lower and would be able to flat-foot the bike with handlebars that have less pull-back than the stock ones. Are you saying what I think you're saying? Cause it is my birthday and all today...
