comstar wheel interchange

theshadowknows
This may be a bit removed from inline 4 questions but I'm at an end through conventional channels. I have a 1983 cx650 custom with a 15", yes 15", shaft drive comstar rear wheel. Later generation. I generally like comstars and have them on my CB900F but these are fugly. I'm considering swapping in 16" & 19" comstars from another Honda. Do all Comstars use the same drive hub bolt pattern, hub width, axle mounts, etc? Are there any gearing issues to watch out for? There are a wide variety of bikes that used 16" comstars so finding a wheel should be simple. I'm just concerned about matching the drive unit to the correct hub width. Does anyone have any wisdom on this to be passed on? Thanks.

Interesting, I did not know Honda ever used a 15" comstar either. I myself have never messed with the CX 500-650 bikes, so I cannot answer your question. However when I am wanting to find out if parts are the same between bikes, like your drive system, I go to this site http://www.powersedge.com/ and look at the parts fiches to compare part#. There may be someone lurking here that can answer your other questions though.

Thanks, I completely agree with your bottom line. I like vintage bikes because they are so much simpler than the technology buckets today. Fuel injection is nice, especially with todays crappy gas, and we all know multi carb engines can be hell to sync. If we get 15% gasohol I doubt the old bikes will run at all on it. Gaskets, seals, lines, even aluminum will get eaten away. Thanks for the site info. Joe
