drilling out rotor

mikeyboy1
does anyone know about drilling out the brake rotor? I saw a post about it somewhere but cant remember where.sounded simple enuff.there was even a pattern for it. thinking maybe it will help keep the rotor cool & get rid of that ungodly screech they make soon as they heat up.

Sorry to tell you, but it will not get rid of the screech. I have drilled out 5 sets now, each with a different pattern, and they all screech. Drilling the rotors is not hard, you just need a good drill press, and some really good drill bits. Also you will want to keep the bits well lubed. As for a pattern, you should be able to make one with a compass, and some poster board.

In the manuals section there is a doc on rotor drilling.

There was a thread a few weeks ago about this as well. I'll see if I can find it.

Here it is: http://honda-cb750-s.456789.n3.nabble.com/Squeeky-front-brake-td4050990.html#a4050995

Here is a question for you old timers. I know older car rotors needed to be turned every couple of breakjobs, can cb rotors be turned or do they have to be replaced?
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

I've drilled 3 front rotors and 2 rear rotors with the same bit. Its an Irwin brand bit I got from Lowe's. Cobalt coated for about $4. Drilled every single one of them dry and running the drill press at a medium speed. Probably 12-1500 rpm.

After you drill the initial holes you are only 1/3 of the way finished, though. You will have to step up to a larger bit and chamfer both sides of each holes. Or,at least, get a good stone and make sure your holes are filed PERFECTLY SMOOTH! If not any burr at all will eat up a set of pads in no time. I mean instantly.

IMO, they only need turned if they are gouged, but dressing them with some 80 grit by hand keeps them quiet for a little while.

I've been considering offering rotor drilling/chamfering services or maybe even selling the drilling patterns. If there's some interest in this I may set it up.

It may or may not. There is no definitive answer.
Follow the stuff I listed in the the linked post. Those almost always work.

I agree with Rerun and Tools. None of the ones I drilled were any quieter than stock. One thing it DOES do,and it's very noticeable, is much better wet braking. The holes really help to shed water off the pads.

No gouges, but there is a lip on the outside edge I'd like to get rid of. Let me know if you start drilling rotors, i'd be in for getting mune done this fall.

The little lip is nothing to be concerned about. The pads do not touch it at all. So, unless there is a lot of gouging to get rid of, I wouldn't turn it at all. Kinda hard to find replacement  rotors.

I wish I could buy up 3 or 4 cores and have them drilled and just swap them out on an exchange basis. Total time of setup, drilling and chamfering-start to finish-is about 2 hours. I'd seen other people charging $75 for this but, including two trips thru the mail, it can get awfully expensive. I was thinking $60 per rotor. Seem fair? What's the general consensus on this?

Depends on how many holes you put into them. The guys I have been doing them for like to do different patterns. Usually around 60 holes. I charge around $40.00 for this. However if I were to do the 4,857 holes you drilled in yours nobody could afford it.

If you bevel the leading edge of the brake pad it should get rid of the screeching. also I put a spot of silicone sealant on the back of the pad to keep it from floating.   Hope it helps.                 Ray aka Grampa

LOL. A little under a dollar a hole, huh? Well, I'm drilling 176 holes when I do one. Seems I'm a better bargain.   Just teasing,of course.
