dyna ignition opinions

kball
I'm going through the whole bike now getting it road worthy and doing a basic tuneup before I even try running it: oil change, valve set, cleaning the carbs (luckily I happen to have an ultrasonic cleaner at work that does wonders with carbs), new plugs and i'm looking at replacing the points. Would I be miles ahead by just getting the electronic ignition? I did a search and it seems people report better starting, so I just wanted to see if you guys think it's a worthwhile upgrade on a stock engine.

I went dyna S and it has been great. Start is better and I did have good starting on points. it got even better. Warm up is faster too. Cold starting on 50 degree mornings is much better. Best thing is that it uses the stock advance and so if it fails for some reason, you just throw the points back on and off you go.

Good enough. Thats all I wanted to hear. I'm gonna order one. It says the coils should be 3ohms or higher. I haven't checked the stock coils yet, but will I need to turf them?

Without knowing what bike you have, hard to say. the sohc from 69-78 used 5 ohm coils.
The 79 - late 80s used 2.5 or something like that but I am not sure.

Mine's a 78 so I should be fine with the stock coils. I'll check them myself and post what they checked out at. How does the dyna ignition compare to the one I swa for sale from cyclex? It's more than twice the money though so I don't know if i'd have the dough to spend on it unless it was a huge improvement on the dyna

Do you mean the optical ignition they have? If so the optical is probably the best you can get but if your bike is stock, you wont gain much from it.
