electrical problems

oldbayman
I've got a 1981 CB750 F with electrical problems. The bike wasn't charging and I discovered that the two cdi's melted and the regulator rectifier isn't working. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this to happen? Could a problem with the stator or rotor have caused this?

I wouldn't know for sure but I would lean towards the voltage regulator. When those go the can do any number of damge to you electrical system. Burnt batteries fried components the works, And sometimes they don't do anything but stop working.

Yes - I found out what was wrong. I changed the voltage regulator but that was not it. I had already changed the two cdi's because they were fried and I still had the same problem. I traced all the wires and saw that they were ok. I took the cover off the generator and checked the brushes and they were ok. When I was cleaning up the wire lugs on the brushes one of the lugs dropped off into my hand. I put on a new lug and cleaned up the rest of the connections and then the bike charged well over 14 volts. I don't know if I pulled the lug off when I was trying to get the brush holder out (the screws were in really tight - I had to use an impact screwdriver) or if the connections were just dirty and corroded. This would be worth at try if you have tried all else. It sucks to have a bike that's not charging. I spent a whole week in the evenings after work searching for the problem - I hope this is some help to you. Regards
