Re: fork bolts

When I installed Progressive Fork Springs, I managed to over-torque one of the hex bolts on one of the forks.  It would just spin, and it slowly leaked ATF fluid...  I ordered a new set of hex bolts from BikeBandit.com, hoping that the bolt was stripped (looked questionable, but not blatantly obvious -- yikes!).  When I put the new bolts in place, I carefully tightened them, and VOILA!  No more leaks, no spinning round-n-round!  Try to order some additional parts to offset the S/H fees, if possible.

By the way, I highly recommend Progressive Fork Springs, and 412 Series shocks.  They took 20 years off the age of my '79 750K's suspension.  I thought I was riding a nearly new bike, compared to how it rode on the factory suspension.  I don't work in the industry, I am just a very happy customer of Progressive's products.  Shop around carefully, though:  I found a vendor who sold me the parts for $100 less then everyone else, and he offered to mount the springs on the shocks for me, for free!  Unfortunately, I could not find this vendor this this year, when I ordered a set of new suspension parts for my Kawasaki Voyager bike.  Good luck.  Cheers!

Re: fork bolts

hi, thanks for the advice.

i may invest in sum prog springs it sounds a good idea, i am doing a full strip down and nut and bolt rebuild in order to produce a show bike but i will still be taking it for a ride in the summer every now and again.

as for the fork problem...i sorted it thanks, a local bike mechanic suggested i used an impact driver on the hex bolts as this shocks them in to locking up and it worked a treat, very simple..

anyway thanks and happy biking...

Re: fork bolts

My bad:  I thought you were referring to the small drain bolts, at the bottom of the fork tubes.

For the top bolts, I had to really hunt to find a 19mm(?) hex socket.  I finally found that VW makes one for the oil pan drain plug on their cars.  It almost fit perfectly...  I tried it manually, but I ended up starting to strip the heads on the bolts in the tube!  Like you, I ended up getting an impact wrench.  That worked beautifully -- and it did it so fast and easy...  I keep my impact wrench handy at all times, now!  Cheers!

What model, and year is your bike? Here is a great site that has a parts look up section. It covers all the Honda models. You should be able to find the parts, and their numbers here.

I am sure there's one on my parts bike.  I'll check on Saturday, and let you know.

Any idea on a good price?

Would that be 1.5 million Zimbabwean dollars?  At one time, that would get you two eggs and a loaf of bread.

Another option would be some spring steel or thick piano wire that you can wrap around the shaft and hook.

hello sir, haven't checked this thread in a few days but if you have one i will gladly take it off your hands for an amount of $US currency we can specify privately...lemme know. powersedge.com says that the spring has been discontinued by honda. i've tried to work out some homemade solutions but i'd much rather the real thing.

thanks all

I would take it from my parts bike, but I have a guy who's interested in the whole pile.  Yes, some of it is in a pile.  If he bails on the deal, I'll see what I can do.

You should be able to find a spring to match that one at any well stocked hardware store. my locale True Value has several trays of springs like that.

Sorry, folks...work has been taking me away from home and many other things.  This year I've spent more time in Canada than I have at home.

I agree with the TOOLS man.  I have someone interested in my entire bike, and would like to keep it as is. Sorry I didn't let you know sooner.
