here is a story for ya....i'm new to this forum

so---i wanted to get a CB750 becasue it was the first bike i ever actually drove, back in '77.  i didnt own it, just drove my friend's.  later in life i had a harley, but he sound scared my kids every time i started it up so i sold it.  (wasnt really my style anyway).  now i have this new-to-me 1977 cb750k that i found on ebay.  the guy who listed it didnt have any bids and i contacted him to end the auction if i paid $1200 (he had a $1999 buy-it-now).  we made a deal, i paid thru paypal, arranged delivery and after 3 weeks of waiting, I got the bike 2 days ago.  it arrived without a key, bill of sale,  and without the title.  the dirtbag said i would get these in the mail but it's been 3 weeks and i have given up on him unless i'm ever in Michigan.  if i wasnt such an idiot, or less attached to this unseen bike, i would have investigated it all more.  turns out this guy's ebay feedback shows this is not the first time he has shipped motorcycles without titles and not the first time he has just "gone under" with no phone or email response.  no key means no fire-up....no title means no registration....since it went away as far as ebay is concerned, i have no real 'honest' fallback.

anyway, i pulled the ignition switch out and dicked around with it for a few minutes and was able to hotwire it.  it fired up pretty well, actually, but of course the headlight dangles now and i have alligator clips jumping across the ignition wiring...but, at least it did start and i can fix those easy problems.

cut to the questions:
1.  i cant seem to get the VIN traced anywhere---Honda dealers, etc. and would like to know if this thing is hot.  i tried the Michigan DMV but they were as helpful as any other DMV.  The utah DMV said i can apply for a title but it needs to be investigated as to determine most recent owner.  Any clue on what to do here? i really dont want to spend a bunch of time getting ths thing running if it ends up getting confiscated when i try to register it. (even though it's kind of a pile right now, somebody has a title to it)
2.  why do you suppose a guy would take the paypal dough, let the bike ship, and not send the key/title/BOS?  i did put in a paypal-complaint but expect nothing out of that.  i really cant imagine a decent motive for that other than he's a lunatic.
3.  i drove the thing for a bit, like 1/4 mile and it died when i hit 2nd gear.  I assume i have to get it running and let it burn out some crud and give it a decent tuneup.....anybody have any advice on resurrections?

thanks guys....i appreciate any advice from the pro's on here.  i'm in a few other forums where the characters are reversed and i'm hoping the good advice i handed out on other occasions will come back to me 'cuz i'm not really a motorcycle guy.

Man that SUCKS!!!!! I have heard that it is not hard to get titles in Michigan. The DMV should tell, you how to do it, or it should be on their web site. I would not give up on it. I would also bet if, you called the local Police, and gave them the VIN number they would tell, you if it was stolen. They will here in Missouri. Also, you could could always use it as a doner, for a titled frame, or a chopper build.

Sorry to hear all of that.I hope it all works out for you. I would do just like Tools said.Contact the local police in HIS area and go from there. I've ran into this a couple times with buying out of state cars. The local police is your best bet and usually the "seller" will have a reputation with them which can help your cause immensely. Best of luck to you.

Otherwise...Welcome to the forum!

I was talking about his local Police. However contacting the Police in the sellers area would not be a bad idea. I would also contact the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Hell on second thought. I would hunt him down like the dog he is, and kick his ass!!!!!

i went to the DMV in salt lake city this morning and they ran the VIN for me in 10 states (Michigan was one)....no 'stolen' claims so far. They gave me a set of forms to fill out: "Insufficient Evidence of Ownership".  all i gotta do is fill all of this out and then wait for it to process thru their system.  I still cant believe that guy had the balls to do this...i might call HIS local cops and ask them to make a trip over there and talk to him about this kind of thing.  Maybe just to get under his skin.  I'm for sure not wasting any on more time with this assh##e.....thanks for all the comments.  joe

Visit the Home Page on this site, and download the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your bike.  Then, if you get a clear title, change out all of the fluids, and filters (oil, fuel, and air).  Do a search on this forum for what to do with a bike that has been sitting for a long time, for more ideas on how to clean it up, internally, and externally.  After the fluid changes, it will be time for a tune-up (follow the FSM).  Cheers!

Hmm. That's crappy for sure!

I'm in Michigan, if he holds the title it's a super-easy process to get a new title. Have to show up, pay $15, and they ship one to your registered address. Takes a week, 2 at most. I had to wait to get one after I had the title, and it fell out on the side of the highway in darkness, in a downpour, while I was loading up the newly-acquired bike into the back of a pickup.

If you need any Michigan-specific help, feel free to get ahold of me. E-mail is cdaiscool@gmail.com.

Good luck getting everything sorted! I can also help you with a process for getting a title. Well, I can show you where to go anyways. There's a few states that allow a simple bill-of-sale for a title, and if you 'sell' the bike to them, give 'em a bill of sale, they can submit that, get a title, then 'sell' the bike back to you. With the new title.

It's a thought, anyways.

I have bought and sold over 25 bikes over the years. I have found that many states back in those early years did not even issue a title for a motorcycle. All that was done is a bill of sale and a registration and licence plate. Here in Nevada all you have to do is take the bike to the DMV and they verify the frame and engine number and run it through the system. If it comes up clear (not reported stolen) they issue a title in your name along with registration and a licence plate and with proof of insurance your done and good to go. As far as the key you can try two things. First there should be a number stamped on the switch. Take that to a Honda Dealer and see if you can get a key. If not you can buy a new switch and steering lock as a set and replace the one you have. I have seen them on EBay. Good luck and I am sure you can work it out.
All stock except Dyna-S solid state ignition and tires. It has 32,000 original miles. The complete bike has had a frame bare restore.

cdaiscool is in western MI, and I'm in northern lower MI. If the dude's up here, I can see what I can do about it. I have little patience for people who hose other folks, but I can be diplomatic when need be. If there's a way I can help, let me know. email is bosco391 -at- yahoo -dot com.

In case a '79 K ignition/key would work for your bike, I have one I'll sell you cheap. I just don't  know if it'd fit.
