i need to vent

blueboy2679
OK everyone...this is not directed at anyone on this forum...I recently took my tank off of my 1980 CB750 F to do some cosmetic work. Everything was going fine, in fact today i bought a new inline fuel filter and fuel line to replace the old. While the tank was on my work bench, i noticed a small bubble in the paint on the inside of the tank on the left side...Like a fool i touched the bubble and i had an explosion of gasoline come pouring out (i had drained the tank, but there was a small amount left) I then discovered 16 other small bubbles in the paint, and they all turned out to be rusted through hole. Therefore, my tank is shot, and i am not happy. I think most of us realize that these tanks are very hard to come by, and when you do discover one, it is usually rusted throughout. I am angered and frustrated. I cannot justify buying one of those $500 fiberglass tanks, it is ridiculous, and I also want to keep it as original as possible. I would like to ask if anyone has anywhere that i might be able to find a halfway decent tank to purchase asap as my riding season in upstate NY is only 3 months long. Thanks for reading this, and feel free to comment.

Well what you could do is strip the paint and find the holes, get them welded shut. A radiator shop can do this usually. Then get a tank liner like por-15 and seal the inside of the tank.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

I hate it for ya. A friend of mine had the same problem, big holes you could see through. We cleaned the tank out good, bouncing a bunch of bolts around in it and gave it a thick coating. Some bondo and sanding on the outside, new paint job and clear coat with shaker cans and you would never know. I did the coating in my tank too. Mine was rusty with a nest and mud dobbers in it. The coating from caswellplating.com was under $50 and another $10 for the paint and clear coat. I'm real picky and turned out really good. It might be worth a try. Paul

I feel for you.

When I had some carb work done we found the tank pretty rusty, but at least it hadn't eaten thorugh.

A proper clean-up and coating and voila!

Good luck.
