k stutter

mikeyboy1
my 78 K runs good--mostly ! hi speed is all there.it's slow speed & sustained throttle.worse when cold. there's a slight stutter, even at 60 mph when throttle is sustained.crack it & she goes. carbs have been cleaned SEVERAL TIMES , tank is clean, timing & points are good.will the accelerater pump do this? it works but maybe not well enuff??

The accelerator pump only works when you are twisting the throttle open. Other then that it is totally dormant. The problem you are experiencing sounds like the carbs are not venting. These carbs vent through the drain/overflow tubes. Make sure that they are not plugged, and are routed to clean/dead air space.

Or a vacuum leak causing a lean condition. An easy test would be to activate the choke (not fully, but in stages)while the stutter is happening (especially at highway speeds) and see it if helps the stutter when you do that. If it does ,and you can't find a vacuum leak, perhaps you need a touch more fuel in the air/fuel screws.

I know it's not a bike, but engines are engines. My truck developed a slight buck ,or stutter, when lugging it around. I tried the choke trick (love manual chokes...) and it went away. Got out the starting fluid and found another(!) vacuum leak. Sealed it up and my stutter was almost completely gone.Tried the choke trick again and it went away again= needed richening. Gave it an extra touch of fuel at the air/fuel screw and she's smooth as a sewing machine now. Sometimes it's the little things.

well ,I opened the pilots to 3+ turns and no more stutter. now I gotta replace the head gasket.got oil leaking between 2&3.possibly coming from those rubber bolt covers under the lifter towers? no end to working on this thing. it IS fun to ride & now runs good.

My 76F seeped at that area, too. I bought a piece of fiberglass stove rope from the hardware store and shoved it in the fins. It took about  7-8000 miles before it was dirty enough to even show.

Hey,it's not a cure,I know, but it will let you ride all summer without any issues. Probably set you back about $5 for the rope.

good idea Shiny.I ordered the gaskets but maybe I'll do that first & replace them next winter. on another note, are you interested in sidecovers for an F? you were gonna check awhile back.they need one repair, otherwise they're pretty nice.I have no use for them.
