Re: new guy with a prob..please help!!

ok i have a thought and it is just a thought so bear in mind. I am still new and tackling my own air leak issue's.   You know you have gas going to the carbs.  And you know this because they are leaking from being flooded.    But do u know if they have been benched synched?

Here is a couple things I would try.

1  shut the pet cock off and drain all the gas from the carbs.

2  Turn the pet cock back on and with the kill switch in the off position.  And the number four carb drain slighty open turn it over till gas comes out of the carb drain.

3  turn petcock back off.  and close number four drain   This shoul give you enough fuel to start the bike with out flooding it.

4A  turn the kill switch to run.  twist the throttle several times to get fuel to the motor. ANd go with the start button for only a couple seconds.

4B  Turn the kill switch to run.  close choke fully and try to start it that way, again only for a couple seconds.

5 pull the spark plugs and identify the size, color and wetness of them.    report it back to here.

you may need to add fuel to you carbs while doing this but do not leave the petcock on.

6 and you need to be careful with this one.  there is a hose coming from the tank to a lill thing on carb number four. and a hose from that to the carbs, remove the hose from the tank and piece.  and put it directly  to where the piece meets the carbs.  turn the gas on and repeat the  steps to get the fuel to carb number four.  Shut the gas off. this will not help with the flooding issue. SO just make sure you shut it off.   If after all these steps which should take 30-45 mins at the most.   ANd nothing changes.  Charge the battery.  THese bike are horrible will even a lil loss of battery power. After the battery is charged good try it again.    If it does not work, then it is time to pull  the carbs and see what was missed the first go round.

ok now the carb flooding problem. the last time you where in the carbs. And cleaned them where they gummy or tacky with residue?  Where the float bowl needles rubber tipped or medal tipped?  Where the floats damaged at all?

Is it the right petcock.  These bike to the best of my knowledge. really do better with the on/off'/ reserve.  Virus the on/ primer/ reserve,  I hooked my Yamaha tank up to the Honda and left for about twenty mins. when I came back I had a flood in the basement. expensive lesson learned.

you'd think, running pods and straight pipes there's gonna be more air flowing thru that thing,
and it would be looking for more fuel.

I think stock, 68's and 102's?

with stock airbox and a 4x1 exhaust I'm running 75's and 110's.

and yes, good idea, filling the carb bowls till they start to overflow,
then shutting the petcock off, mine will run for 30 seconds to a minute till it sucks dry.

and ya, even a little low on battery charge fooled me more than once, thinking it was a fuel thing.

@motogrady,    glad I am heading in the right direction.  prior to adding the fuel/air mix to the equation. I wanted to see if he would do the steps I would have done.   IF these steps don't work then we will head in that direction.    In a prior post I asked him about the jet sizes and he said ho could not remember. so I put it on the back burner for now.

Personally I am learning a whole lot from this site. And I am very greatfull for all the help I am getting

ha, mine took 4 tries before it got even close. congrats guy.

they way I finally got my 79 acting right, after the 4 times cleaning,
first backed out the air screws, the ones you can get to underneath the carbs,
all the same.  Then, took it out and felt how it pulled from the bottom.
at this point, no idle. went from 1.5 to 2, then 2.5 turns, and felt 3 turns out
gave the best response when getting on it.

then, adjusted the knob underneath the carbs, the one you have a hard time
not burning your hand when you finally find it, to get the proper idle.
