one quick question about clutches

This is going to sound like I am abusing my bike, maybe I am,but I'm not trying to. How tough are the clutches/transmissions on these bikes? I was out for a quick spin yesterday and I romped on the throttle while in first gear. I wasn't going very fast and the bike wasn't really accelerating. Nothing out of the ordinary,I was just going too slow to be in the "power band",yet. My brain went went into drag racing mode due to too many years playing with cars so I fanned the clutch to help the rpm's flare up a bit.I wish I hadn't done it,I wasn't thinking about it,just instinct.Well, the rpm's DID flare and the front tire popped up a good little bit. All that to ask this:will these bikes take this? I know it is never a good idea to more or less dump the clutch on anything, but we used to dump and fan the clutches on our KTM's constantly and they could not be hurt. The clutches/trannys on those bikes truly were unbreakable and would handle 100% abuse. Will these bikes take that? Because,to be honest,it felt great speeding away faster than ever before hanging the front hoop in the air! I wanna do it again, but not if I'm gonna tear up my bike.

I will admit, this is somewhat embarrassing to ask:" Hey,if I run the dog poo out of my bike it will still hold up,right?"

We never DO grow up, do we?

Thankfully, the clutches are pretty easy to work on with these bikes. I'm sure there are still some shops selling racing clutch parts.  Matter of fact, the guy across the pond (with the dry clutch) may know something.  He's a racer guy.

I would expect once in a while feathering the clutch to keep the revs up is OK, but any heavy use/abuse just takes life out of the clutch parts.  TOOLS may have the right idea: torque converters and 2 speeds.

You will get some use even doing this. obviously as Luke said, parts life will be shorter, mainly the disks.
They are pretty robust for their age really. If you do burn it up too much, I recommend honda plates and springs. If you do not mind a harder pull, barnett springs work very well.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Thanks for the replies. I'm not too awful concerned with the clutch as much as I am the hard parts in the tranny. If I do something stupid and have to replace the clutch,no big deal. But will the internals of the tranny hold up?...or should I go with an autojoking of course

From what I have heard, you drag racers love 2 speed automatics.

True! I've never used one myself. My heavy cars always dictated a 3 speed anyways. BTW, I am a former drag racer as of yesterday. I put the enclosed trailer and the motor/trans out of the Old Bomb up for sale this week.

Going to "Pro Street the Old Bomb"? You know, it would be a lot cheaper to run a bike. The matics are the hot ticket from what I hear.

I guess you would call it prostreet, yes. I'm thinking of going new school on the Olds I have considered running a bike, but I am going to be,for lack of a better term, crew chiefing two cars in my old class and one in a nostalgia class this year. I need a hiatus anyway. I enjoy tuning/building cars more than I actually do driving them. Go figure.

I understand. I am kind of that way with bikes. Most of my riding is, for transportation. I don't do much pleasure riding.

I'm opposite with my bike. I dont want to have it down,I wanna ride. The cars are a fun challenge to make something that should not be fast....fast! The plan for the Olds-for now- is an LS mtor with twin turbos. Have seen several of the combinations in the 900-1000 hp range getting 18-20+ mpg with 100% reliability.

Good question.  I had a 305 superhawk I us to do that to.  After busting a gear and finding that both shafts in the trans were bent I quit doing it. Just saying.

Since you are asking about the toll on the actual gears, I limped my bike back home last week with a torn clutch cable (so no clutch).  Even though I had to force my bike in and out of first, neutral, second, third gear through stop and go traffic, the gearbox didn't let me down.

Now, for the thrill of risking broken bones due to riding back like this?  Priceless.

Well I think cycleX sells the tranny gears and such, and they undercut them to help keep them from popping out. Obviously not overly cheap but hey, much cheaper than a tranny on a car!

Hey Thorby, you can always do this if the cable breaks

So what is the verdict on this subject? I know anything is breakable under the right stress. So will the clutch come apart before the gears? Do people break the gears often? Or are they pretty tough? I was just curious of the reputation  of the gear boxes. For example, a NP205 transfer case is bullet proof. I know guys with 15-1800 hp mud trucks running stock NP205's with no mods pulled out of junk yards. They do not break...ever.But a NP208 with a good chain in it will fail if pushed with a stock engine on any tire bigger than a 35. And it will puke its internals pretty quick, too.

I don't know anything about the tranny on our bikes, I just wanted to say thanks for reminding me about that story with the pictures.  What a great trip that kid had.  I'll have to look that up again and re-read it.
