petcock issue

borissytch
Hi,

I noticed that the petcock doesn't cut the fuel off in OFF position - the engine keeps running. I paid attention to that because my carbs are overflowed (a separate problem) and even when I turned the petcock OFF, shut off the engine, the fuel was still dripping while the engine was cooling.
Before I noticed it I took apart the tank and the petcock with the line several times trying to clean the tank, and cleaned the petcock as well.

Any opinion, experience, advice on that?
Thanks!

You need to replace, or rebuild the petcock. They do go bad after 40 years.

There's enough fuel in the bowls for the bike to run for several moments before the engine will die. My driveway is 1/2 mile long and I turn my fuel off when I first turn in my driveway. Drains the bowls for me (pretty much) incase I end up not riding for a while.

If in fact your valve has rotted inside ( the rubber bits) that could be the debris that is causing your carbs to flood.

Some petcocks have rebuild kits for them readily available. Much cheaper than a whole new valve and pretty dang easy to do. Usually two screws and it all just comes apart.

It didn't occur to me that it could idle so long with the petcock OFF. I only waited for few seconds and then stopped the engine. I thought the petcock should shut the engine off right away. I'll see how it works once I put it back together. Maybe it's not bad after all.

Thank you guys!

As soon as I park I shut off the petcock, then let it idle while I take off my gloves, helmet and glasses, and ready to walk away. By then I don't have any dripping.
