my 72  started poping out of 2nd gear the end of last season I think it got speed shifted by a"buddy" I let use it  any one know what the possible cause ?/parts I need to gather up? I rode it after it started doing it & sometimes it stayed in gear so I mostly shiftedby 2nd but Ive had this bike since 1976 so I want to fix it ..

If it was speed shifted badly, it is probably a bent fork.

I have encountered this problem on Honda 4s , Kawasaki 900s and 1000s and even a hayabusa , and each time the gears had to be back cut , So you are up for an engine strip for sure and find an Ole school mechanic who has contacts in the drag racing field and they will be able to get the gears back cut , problem solved or get new gears for your bike , preferably not second hand gears or you may be in the same boat again , cheers Martin

Check the fork first. I know after a while certain gears can pop out but it is nut usually a sudden thing. I mean if it did not happen before, then someone else rode it and it happens now, then most likely a shift fork.
If the bike gradually starts popping out more and more, then I could see the gears being worn.

This was  a common problem on the early bikes. The shift drum has a set of squiggly grooves machined into it that the shift forks ride in to move the gears back and forth. The problem is that there is a pointed section or high spot on the drum where 2nd gear engages and this point breaks away from the drum and makes the groove too wide to hold the shift fork in position, alloying the gears to disengage.
You will need a new shift drum, probably a fork and possibly second gear and pinion.

I doubt it is that serious. I suppose it could be but I have never seen anyone have to replace all that over a simple pop out. not on an sohc cb anyways.

My 73 does this. I know it was speed shifted...a lot back in the day
Is there a way to fix it without disemboweling the whole engine?
