replaced cluth, stalling problem

opie18
Hi Team (that's what I call you guys in my head when something inevitably goes wrong).

I replaced my friction disks and plates and am quite certain I did this correctly. I followed the shop manual and had a printed out version of a forum members walk through of how to do this. Everything fit back into place no problem. I then changed the oil. Clutch lever felt good and looking down at the clutch cable by the clutch housing, all seemed to be working as it should. Bike started fine and after warming up, I shifted into first. The bike lurched forward and stalled even with the clutch lever engaged. This happened immediately after shifting into 1st. I pumped the lever a few times and tried again. Same results. I tried starting the bike in 2nd, same results. I've been adjusting the clutch cable for the last hour with no changes. The bike simply stalls right after shifting into gear, even with clutch lever engaged. Any thoughts??? Feeling stumped.

How many plates did you put in? Maybe there is an extra plate in there and so the pack is too tight and can't disengage? Or an adjustment is off, and basically the same thing? The lever would probably feel ok as you are just fighting the springs like usual.

Did you adjust the clutch actuator in the clutch cover?

Thanks guys!

I had seven friction plates and six steel plates...plus that double plate that was still ok and within spec. Maybe that is why it is "too tight" in the clutch pack?

Yes, I adjusted the clutch actuator to the best of my knowledge. Manual says to tighten it until resistance and then unscrew 3/4 inch. However, when I tightened the nut back up, I thought that actuator might be too loose. Should it be pretty tight?

3/4 Inch  You only back it off 1/4 turn. That is why you cannot disengage the clutch.

Tried adjusting the clutch actuator....no luck. No change in symptoms. I guess I'll have to go back to step zero and do the job over again. Anyone have insight into problem areas I might find? Any help is appreciated. Thanks all!
