smoking

well, I got brave and started fooling with carb settings (pilot screws without gauges) and now it idles higher, pops a bit, but puffs white smoke constantly. I am shopping for gauges so i can sync, but i hope it's not above my knowledge scale to mess with jets and settings. is the brass pilot screws under carbs the only adjustable setting or is there other?     1979 CB 750 DOHC Limited Edition

the screws under the carbs are idle screws    get them even  idle about 1100 rpm    then the sync screws are on top    number 2  carb is the base   no setting.  you match the  others  with two.  looking down on the carbs  you will see little screws with a locknut.  lossen the locknut  then the scew til ya got it.   you willneed the special tool to do this   its a long screwdriver inside a  shaft with a socket on the end.  its about 30 bucks

thanks for the info...it's making sense on how strange it was acting when adjusting the bottom screws. back to the books for me. then i gotta add tool, gauges, gauge lines, and fuel line (so i can keep fuel tank off while syncing.

1.  Get the FSM for the DOHC CB750 on our home page.
2.  Turn to the section called Maintenance.
3.  Read it all the way through, at least twice.
4.  Apply what you've learned to your bike.  Try to get everything set according to their baseline.
5.  Let us know how it's going.

fantastic info....while waiting for gauges to come in i was able to tweek it all up and she's running fantastic so far. Thanks again. I was able to adjust sync screws by loosining nut with 8mm deep socket and turn slightly with screwdriver then put idle back down by hand with large knob underneath.
