starter issues!! HELP PLEASE

Angelcabreraa
Thanks for the add guys, having some issues with the bike.. here goes nothing.. 79 cb750
this is the bike 79 cb750
So my starter button was bad so i pulled it off and just started the bike with a screw driver (may not have been the brightest idea but its my DD and i had no other option) so the bike would start fine like that until yesterday i was riding and i stop and park it and leave it running and when i look pure white smoke was coming out from the the sproket cover area right by the dip stick area, i quickly turned it off and few min later turned it back on and no smoke i rode home and half way there the bike started to bog out i was in 5th gear so i down shift to 4th and then it turned off while riding i quickly put in the clutch and rolled, i downshift in to 3rd and tried to start it by poping the clutch to bump start it.. the bike tire locked up so i pulled the clutch again and just rolled to a safe place, i pull over and put the bike in neutral and i put the screwdriver and it shot some bike ass sparks and the starter clicked once and i took the screwdriver off and i heard the starter turn off.. so i was reading and researching, but came up empty handed i bought a new alternator rotor, starter solenoid just waiting for them to come in.. any idea what it could be, has this happened to anyone thanks in advance!

Is it possible the starter motor hasn't disengaged once the engine started and has now burnt out (hence the smoke) and locked up?

  • I had a starter problem on my CB750A (slow to turn and would stop).  Turned out to be the starter was bad.  Replaced it with another starter and it worked right away.
  • Had another starter that quit working on my CB750 (wouldn't crank) took it out and checked it on the bench and it worked great.  Put it back in the bike and it wouldn't turn.  Replaced the starter with another used one and it worked great.
  • Had another starter on a small Honda Super Cub that didn't work.  Took it to a car starter place and they said it was good.  Put it back on the bike and it worked fine after that.
  • Wondering if your starter clutch is still good?  Some people say that tapping on a starter will free it up.  I have never had that work for me.
Rebuilding a starter is costly so I would buy a good used one for $25 or less.

Dang. Well, the white smoke you described made me think of boiling oil steam. Any chance it just overheated and caused it to seize? Hard to overheat on 5th gear, though. Man, that's just weird. Got me curious! lol
