So ive been trying to remove the swing arm from the frame of my 79k and i cant for the life of me remove the long bolt it pivots on. everthing ive read says it should "tap" out but i put a nut on to protect the threads and have been trying to knock it out but it wont budge! Any tips/hints/suggestions?

I had the same issue with mine.Ended up that what the issue was,it had been neglected, not greased properly, and the bolt was seized to the tube the bushings.I ended up forcing mine out and destroying the bushings.Cost about $50 for new brass bushing, but i have seen them on ebay since for around $20-25.That bolt holds a tube that rides in the bushings. What happens is the bolt/tube gets rust scale on it and doesnt want to slide out because it has "grown" too large to fit through the bushings. You may try alot of penetrating oil,i like PB Blaster, and see if you get lucky, but the amount of scale that was on mine,it would have never came out without taking the bushing with it.Good luck, hope this helps!

Cool, I'll give the penetrating oil a try. If it doesnt work tho, how did you end up forcing it out on your bike?

I put the nut back on the bolt, just like you did,but i used a block of wood and a rubber deadblow hammer.Destroyed the bushings, bolt & nut was fine

Well I still wasnt able to knock it out, I worked a lot of penetrating oil around the bolt and beat on the thing with a deadblow mallet, but it still won't even budge. So I got as much oil around the bolt as I could and I'm gonna leave it overnight and hopefully it loosens up, but if that doesnt work any more ideas as to how to get this thing out?

Yeah, probably have to try heat. The factory bushings are a sort of composite with what looks like fiberglass reinforcing.Shouldn't take much to melt them out.If all else fails and you have to cut the bolt,I do have one I can sell you.Another alternative to buying a bolt, and i wish I had done this one mine, would be a good piece of all-thread rod with nice shiny stainless steel acorn nuts on both ends.Looks nice!
|
|
I'm not entirely sure of what I'm going to say but I would be cautious about using All-thread rod. I suspect the stock Bolt is made of high(er) carbon steel for strength and toughness. The swing arm bolt must take a fairly high sheer load, including significant shock at times and I'm not sure all-thread rod will be up to the demands of the job. I would hate anyone to have a nasty accident if the rod failed.

You are right about that,Peter. It's not real cheap, but you can get grade 8 all thread.

What I was concerned about was someone justngetting regular low carbon threaded bar from the hardware store

Why not use a piece of rod, and thread both ends? Or cut the head off the stock bolt, and thread that end? It should be long enough.

If you torch the bolt and let it cool It'll come out. esp, if you use the map gas, (yellow canister) it burns much much hotter then the blue canisters. torch it beat it and be done.
