tire mounting/balancing

alehman
Hey all,

do you guys do your own mounting and balancing or do you generally consider it worthwhile to pay a bike shop to take care of that? That is, given the importance of doing it right and the machinery involved.

I do my own mounting and balancing.
Now many of the new tires need very little work to balance.

I called AVON and asked them about the tire position on the rim in relationship to the valve stem and the technician said there was no mark and it did not matter. That was the Avon Road Rider 26's.

I balance my tires with Dyna beads and they work great. They use them on aircraft wheels and long haul trucks too now.

The last time I took a wheel to a motorcycle shop to be balance they used a bubble balancer and when I got home the lead weight had fallen of of the wheel because they had not bothered to clean the surface of the rim.

I normally remove old N put new on band, tube?,Tire,Lil air then let them balance, bounce the tire afew times and slap the weight to be sure it's on tight,(do all this to be safe N less scratches).

Know I had A guy when I lived in Cal.that would speed balance my tires(80-90m.p.h.) while on the bike,
For free,He bought chains by the rolls N cut to length,There are lots of things out there just keep looking N don't burn no bridges,He owed me (paint job) .

I use my local bike shop. $30 to mount and balance two tires. Cheap insurance against me tearing up my rims with tire spoons. And I'm the kinda guy who hates to hire out ANYTHING.
