I have a 1980 cb750 C, I was told once i can use motor oil as long as it does not say energy conserving. Other people said only motorcycle oil. What does everything use? Thanks sandy (male)

I have a 81 750C. I use 10W40 motorcycle oil most of the year.I believe  motorcycle oil has some additives that may help clutch /transmission operation. I switch to 20W50 in summer when temps are above 75-80, but 10W40 will work in all temp ranges.

In the 28 years that I have had my CB750K I have used Mobil 20W50 with no ill effects at all. This includes winter and summer driving

I just went to check with the Automotive engineers that I work with and they tell me that there is no difference between motorcycle oil and other oils other than the sticker on the front of the bottle.

Same goes for energy conserving.  They are marketing messages only.

The only issue is to ensure that you get oil of the correct weight, i.e. 10w 50.

Cheers

Would disagree strongly with that.  This has to do w/ the API cert.  Energy conserving=contains friction modifying additaves=bad for wet clutch.  Other than that I would agree there's not much difference.  I do prefer synthetic, and my favorite for a wet clutch bike is rotella.  Made for diesels, and designed to keep lots of stuff in suspension which IMO is great for a wet clutch app.  It's cheap, and comes in a big bottle. ;)
