uneven brake pad wear

seestheday
Hi,
Has anyone had uneven brake pad wear?
My front disc brakes were squealing so I pulled the pads to take a look at them and noticed that one of them seemed to be wearing unevenly.  It was thin on the top and fat on the bottom.
One of the pins was super difficult to remove if it matters.  I ended up ruining it and have ordered the replacement from honda.

It was from my 81 cb750k and its single piston.

Is my rotor warped?  I don't feel it pulse or anything when I brake.

It sounds like the caliper is not mounting up true/parallel to the rotor. My bike is a '76 F,i dont know what the differences would be between your model and mine, but you may have to shim something in order for the caliper/pad to run true with the rotor.   This is just my thoughts, and not to be taken as an accurate evaluation of your problem,or even a correct fix, just an idea.

Thanks Shiny,
I'll look into what a shim will do.

The calipers mount different between the 76-81. The 76 pivots on a swingarm. The 81 slides on the mount sort of like on a car. You mentioned that one of the mounting bolts was damaged. This was your problem. The caliper could not slide on it. Once, you replace it it should be fine. I would recommend putting some antisize compound on all moving parts. Also I doubt the rotor is damaged. They are a lot harder then the break pads.

Sweet, I was hoping it was something that simple.
I was definitely going to put some silver paste that I have on the pins so they won't seize again.
Do I need new pads, or can I use the one that is worn unevenly? There is still a decent amount of thickness to it.

File it down flat, and it should be allright. Be careful not to breath in the filings.

No offence tools but, my 2 pennies, if he can get/afford new pads for it I would go that route.  Mostly just a safety issue, with some things like tiers and breaks its just not a good idea to skimp there.  I'm sure they would be fine to file down and use, its just up to you if that's something you want to do. Me personally I would only do that in a pinch until new ones could be put on.

Another thing to think about (though Im not sure if this affects stainless rotors) is once a pad is bedded in unevenly like yours, it may cause uneven wear on the rotor.  It can do this on cars and cheap rotors but not sure on these bikes.

You have a good point there, but I am frugal. As long as the pad is still in the wear range. Why not use it? Also the rotors used on these bikes are, so much harder then the cast pieces used on cars it would be all most impossible to make them wear unevenly.

I'm with Tools on this one, if you have alot of pad left go for it.  I have done this on my shadow and I'm still running them 2yrs later, totally safe.

Re: uneven brake pad wear

Thanks guys,
I'm going to get new pads. Any idea how much they are from Honda? Not sure if I should get them from there or if its worth driving 45min to get then from siriusconinc.com.

If I need to file them down so they're flat then there won't be enough left for then to last very long.

It is common to see unevenly worn disk brake pads.

It happens on cars, motorcycles every type of machine with disk brakes.
There are many reasons for it and all you do is replace the pads with new ones.
Make sure all the parts are clean and not binding.
Make sure that all moving surfaces are smooth.

Sometimes it is driving styles too.
If people slam on the brakes as opposed to gradually applying pressure that can effect the wear pattern as well. Also the brake dust can cause parts to get clogged up and bind.

Just clean all the parts, inspect, and replace the pads and make sure the piston in the caliper is not stuck and binding. It should move in and out smoothly.

It is NOT unusual to see uneven pad wear.

Paper jam but paper not jammed?
IT is because you see no paper but small bits of paper can get stuck in the little springs and sensors,
Paper dust build up and just dust is a problem in printers too.

Do not file down or sand disk brake pads!! Cheeeeessssshhhhh!!!!

It is VERY unlikely you could get them flat.

Just get a NEW set of pads and clean the parts that need cleaning.
Inspect all of the parts carefully. Make sure the disk brake piston is not cocked in its bore.
But just your question would make me not want YOU to work on anything!

You are dealing with brake parts and they are critical.
If they fail to work properly you can cause an accident and get someone killed.

Be responsible.

Re: uneven brake pad wear

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the help.  Got the new pin from the Honda dealer for around $10.  Put new pads in and it seems to be rolling and braking fine.  Hopefully I'll be able to take it out for a spin tomorrow morning.  It raining way too much tonight.

I was surprised by how thick the new pads were.  Since my bike has 87K on it i hope I'll have the chance to replace them again
