I'm not up on the DOHC's at all,but doesn't that have something to do with a cam chain tensioner?

dunno. clueless. noticed it this morning on my walk-around. going in for an oil change in the next few days, don't want to be taken with a "did you know you're missing your secondary widget? you could blow your engine; we can fix it for $xxx. plus tax" when it is a 30¢ something.

it's an 80K

I concur.  Probably not too critical, but it could lead to a bit of oil loss if the plug isn't there.

Cheap fix: get the part from your local Honda dealer.

5 bucks for the plug, a week and a half to get one -- in a major city! luckily, I'm heading off to another city next week and they have one/put it on hold for me.

next question: how long should it take to do an oil change? never done one, gonna give it a go; stealership said an hour and a half labour!

There are some people that just put a rubber faucet washer in there, then tighten a screw into it to cause it to expand and seal.  Quick and simple fix.  If you spend more than a half hour changing your oil, including the warm up to get the oil hot and flowing, it's because you spilled the oil and have a big cleanup going on.  Just keep track of the o-ring, spring, and washer in the filter housing.

I wondered about paying $150-175 for the OC.

That much for an oil change is criminal. Warm it up, pull the plug and let it drain. Pull off the filter, making sure to keep the spring and washer. Install new filter. Replace plug and add 4 litres (sorry, quarts) of fresh oil. Run the engine for a couple of minutes to circulate the new oil. Check the level and top up. Yer done in a half hour.

Yep, cam chain tensioners seal.

When I put my new one in I did it with the head off, and I believe it needs to be off to do it properly because it fit in from inside the head and rests on a shelf inside the head keeping it from falling out. Not sure how yours could have fallen out unless it disintegrated. The tensioner pushes against it, and it pushes against the head.

I imagine if you needed to get by you could stuff a washer in there with a screw.

I believe someone with great knowledge and ability did, but I didn't take up the challenge, preferring to keep my hands [more likely my driveway] clean.

I never ride enough during a season to have to do one partway through, and when I take the bike in for winter [jealousy rears its ugly head at all those who have useable garages] I just have it done then.

Monday I do it. Steep learning curve. Don't loose the spring, don't kick the oil bucket over, don't use 2-stroke oil.

I don't get it either. Bike was well ready. And would that have been replaced or at least looked at when things were apart and the valves shimmed? Beyond my knowledge and ability. I'm not about to pull it apart.

I imagine if you needed to get by you could stuff a washer in there with a screw.
so you're saying that putting it into place and holding it there with duct tape ain't gonna cut it?

well, TOOLS, O/C complete. successful operation.

concern about the spring not necessary.

lesson learned: put the drip pan a bit further back; oil drips on the pipe and flows back.

oil on sale; filter not. saved $125+ [or rather, didn't waste $125+].

It's a seal plug    part 91208-422-003.  You can put it in from the outside. just line it up straight, tap it in flush.  then use a center punch to seat it.  the punch will cause it to expand.
I just replaced one in my  81.  I got it from  Bike shop.   the size is 11.5X7.
