Well my first bike was an Aprilia scooter. Wanted to see if I would like riding. I did. So my first big bike is my CB 750 that I bought for 800 bucks. I am a really late bloomer. I am just now learning to ride at age 47 and a as a grandpa!LOL

Well it started when I was about 8years old. Traded a RC truck for a Honda Elsinore 50. Trail rode it for about a year and like a dummy sold it. 11 I picked up a 4hp mini bike that was cool ride thought town one day beside some guy on a big bike. He laughed all the way through town. Traded that for a Honde trail 50 that was in boxes. About two months had it running. Rode that for about 1-1/2 years. Blow the motor delivering news papers. ( down hill wide open is not a good idea )  In 1999 I bought a Suzuki gl550 rode that for a few years. In the the present I am right back to Honda's two 78 cb750

Re: what was you first bike?

Hoosier Daddy
I grew up on mini-bikes and then tearing up the fields around my house on my buddies xr75, then anothers Kawa KE100.
Got my first road bike in '81 just out of school.... A '69 BSA Thunderbolt that came with a '70 650 Lightning in parts. There were enough to build the Lightning, plus have a spare engine and front end and a couple boxes of spare bits.
Kept the Thunderbolt stock and Cafe'ed out the Lightning with a set of Clubmans and taking off the fenders. Back then I had missed the original Cafe' movement and way too early for the latest resurgance. I was kind of a odd duck I suppose.
Marriage and Kids soon forced their sale, but now 30+ years later, I found myself another 650 BSA to re-live my youlth and rebuild it.

81 Honda CB750C - Current Project
67 BSA Spitfire MkIII - Next Up (Full Resto)
81 Honda GL1100 - Bob / Cafe´
80 Suzuki GS750L - Bratstyle
72 Honda CB450K5 - Basket Case
73 Honda CB350F Cafe' (Gone but not forgotten)

Don't wait for opportunity to knock... kick the door down and drag the old harlot in!

Hey alfa a super sport is a super sport. Right

Just like a bike is a bike. They are all junk when you can not get them to run. Seam a lot of us started out on pretty small bikes..

I wish I still had mine. I remember when going through a 5 foot puddle seamed like a small lake. The good days.

First bike I owned, was the bike in the sig and that I'm taking out.

Took a dirt bike out for a few laps around a friend's place once, that was fun. Only did that once, though, as the place was 2 hours away and that's where he stored 'em. Never rode again after that until I got the CB750.
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

My first bike was a '37 Norton 500cc hardtail. An old army bike that I got in baskets at age 15 (1965). Took me almost 2 years to put it together with a lot of help from a local club that my brother had friends in. They also helped me out with parts etc. Great bunch of guys. When the bike got stolen in '68 they got me a '49 BSA 250 twin, no charge, and said they'd do all they could to get the Norton back.

Good Times!
Livin' my life like a song.

Re: what was you first bike?

Alot of great stories here.  Mine is not at that speacial but still the same.  I had aquired serval bikes sarting at the age of 5, then one day about 8 ish. some one had thrown a moped in the trash. Well i thought it was in the trash. The man said if i could start it I could have it. So he showed me how to pedal it and then flip the piece over the rear tank. poof, poof nothing.

So about an hour later I was heading to the public pool and seen him again. This time he was a few streets from a decent hill. I took that thing and went like a bat out of hell. After the panic past i fliped the piece and gurgle gurgle, poof fire. I was riding. I felt ten feet tall.   I could never get it going again. as i was not strong enough to get it back up the hill.

Then I got a gs 550, 8? something, for my fifteenth or sixteens birthday.

Great thread. You all have posted some great stories, I hope to read more.

Re: what was you first bike?

My story began much sooner than when I actually bought my first bike. The 1978 CB 759 SS was an achievement for me. It had 1500 miles and was virtually a new bike. I paid $1600 for the purchase.

With my family moving to the states from Jamaica we were not the richest. With political unrest in Jamaica is what caused my parents to make the choice and flee. It was the best decision coming to the states. I seem to think my Mom had the uncanny knack of being the "dreamer". My family had to leave a lot of our fortune their so in 1973 we headed to the new adventure.

All through my younger years I would also day dream looking through the sears catalog and dreaming of that cool Briggs and Stratton mini bike. I finally gained that 15 seconds of courage to ask my parents for a mini bike. I think it was $110 but there was that emphatic "NO". She went on to say they would never buy anything with two wheels and a motor for me. I was resigned with the answer that I will never own my own motorcycle.
What I did come to find out was my Father also owned a norton BSA which he crashed and broke his collarbone when he was 21. The story goes that he and his brother in law to be we're riding into a blind corner and lost control hitting the banking along the road.

The dream never died. On summer vacations(not really vacations but instead it was a visit of family friends) I would day dream of riding a dirt bike alongside the car as we traveled. I grew, got older, full time job, and saved my money. Being 18 or 19 years of age I knew things, and felt mature. But that fear of my parents disgust would still lurk if I bought a bike.

With money in hand I went for it. Never asking my parents with whom I still lived with. Fully expecting an argument from them and even being kicked out of the house I dared to bring it home.

Fast forward to this current day, I am 51. I have been racing motorcycles for about 10 years now. Between my wife Nancy and I we own 14 bikes now in all states of tune. She has always shown her support for me racing and riding even when I crash and hurt myself badly. I have fallen twice on the street and more on the track.

This year it's time to refresh the 1981 CB750k and the 1979 XS11 Special which coincidentally are both her bikes.
