1975 CB750 Super Sport....need a new muffler!

750K8
Helping my dad restore a 1975 CB750F0.

His pipes are in great shape. His muffler, not so much.

Could I swap a 77-78F muffler onto it and will it work as a nice bolt-in replacement with no mods needed?

Thanks!

According to this page from vintagecb750.com http://www.vintagecb750.com/products/7/exhaust the 75-76 F uses a different muffler then the 77-78 F. I do know that the head pipes are different on them.

Oh man, so no direct fit? Is the inlet of the muffler the wrong size, or it won't be able to match with the rear mount?

If that's true, then I guess it's either find a 75-76 muffler or buy an ugly aftermarket one...

I am not sure what the differences are on the muffler, but you should be able to find an aftermarket muffler with the correct diameter opening, or one that can be reduced to work that would look good.

As tools said, aftermarket is a way to go. Otherwise, davidsilverspares.com or csmnl might have a stock pipe. It will be expensive though.

Yeah, saw that. Not an exciting price, though.

Hey 750K8, how bad is the muffler? I have one from a 1975 750f that is a little rough, but I don't know if it's any better than what you are working with now. I could send pictures if interested. Let me know.

The one I have now has two large holes on the bottom. That's just what you see on the outside too. The baffle is likely shot. :(

I think if we pick up a 75-76 muffler that we'd want it in 8/10 or above shape.

Was hoping that we could go for a 77-78 muffler, but it sounds like it simply won't fit and wouldn't be worth the effort to fit.

I thought about repairing this muffler, but that would take considerable effort/time/money.

I understand. I would call this about a 6/10. Previous owner made a dent in it to fit an early K frame, which is why I give it a low score.

Dang those previous owners sometimes!!!!

Honestly, if it's cheap enough, then it may be repairable, but with some steps:

1) remove chrome
2) drop off to PDR to remove dent (unless it's severely dented)
3) Re-chrome

That's probably $400 just right there, though.

Oh it's definitely repairable, just not by me. Little rust with no real holes. Just the purposely made modification. Not as nice as the ebay one. You could have it for the cost of shipping. Been setting in my garage for long enough.

Still looking for a 75 or 76 muffler.

I'm also looking for the cowl trim as well!
