1977 Drive Chain

Hello,

I have a 1977 CB K , and I'm wondering what the difference between High Tensile (HT) 530 and HT 630, and which one I need to replace on my bike. I have a hunch it's the 630, because I counted the links and got 86.

The 77 did come with a 630 chain. However I would recommend switching to an O-ring 530. They are plenty strong, cheaper, and lighter. You will have faster acceleration, and better gas mileage.

Thanks, very useful information.

If I change to the 530, does that means I have to change both sprockets?

Does the 530 refer to the size of the links?

Yes, and yes. You should always change the chain, and sprockets together. If, you put a new chain on worn sprockets it is going to wear really fast to match the sprockets. It's also the same if, you put a worn chain on new sprockets. The sprockets will wear to match the chain.

Better get rid of that big heavy 630 chain before it goes through the engine case!!

Obviously joking as a 630 will not go through an engine case unless you so abuse it that it actually breaks.

The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
