Here's my project :
I had already taken off the air cleaner, carburetors, rear fender and a few other parts as well before I snapped any of these pictures. Not much to look at I know, but take a peek anyway :D

battery box out, chain guard off, headers just about off. spiders killed. main wire harness out of the way. most of the wiring looks like it needs to be replaced. of course.

haha. Run your vacuum in there and suck out the big stuff( acorns?...) If it just looks like the ports are all sooted up dont sweat it. A brand new motor will look the same way in a few thousand miles.

Good progress so far-keep it up!

Ditto Shiny. If the engine will turn over just clean it out.

thanks guys. makes me feel like i am headed in the right direction. it does look like its full of soot. thought maybe santa gave me coal this year and just shoved it all into the engine instead of putting it under the tree :)

the engine will turn over. the wiring harness is in awful condition though. one of the things i will surely end up having to buy. other than that, i just need to get these carbs cleaned, a lot of gaskets replaced, and lots of cleaning. shiny, pretty sure there are in fact acorns in there. lol

HA! Seems like they always are.

If you dont want to spend on a new wiring harness you could always wire it bare bones. No handlebar indicators,neutral/clutch safety switch or turn signals in this diagram, but everything else is there

Looking like a good start! Did you happen to take a pic of wich way the exhaust flanges went? Not the bolt on chrome collars but the two peice flang between those and head. I think mine were backwards on my ss.

dirty, i didnt take a pic of that. are you referring to the two posts that the header bolt threads on to? those are still on the head, when i took the headers off the collar came off with the tubes but i am pretty sure that was it. i will post some pics of that here in a sec.
working on trying to get this front brake off. pain in the ass. its rusted to the rotor. good times.
