Greetings, folks! I am new to the forum and live in Houston. I am 42 and have been riding since the age of four when my dad built me a little mini-bike with a 2.5hp Tecumseh lawnmower engine.
My next bike was a '69 CT70 (also had a '78), then a '79 XR80. In '78, my dad bought a CB750F Super Sport and I used to sit in the garage and stare at it. I remember spending hours and hours drawing it once when I was eleven. Lost the picture and would give anything to have it back (I've always been relatively "artistically inclined"). When I was fifteen, I began riding it and I loved it. At some point, my dad got rid of it and ever since, I have wanted to get another one.
Well, guess what! Today, I picked up a - you guessed it - 1978 CB750Four Super Sport and I got a really, really good deal. At least, I think I did...
I bought the bike from a guy who had listed it three times on eBay and had actually sold it twice, but both buyers ended up balking on the deal. Anyway, here are the details.
From what I could see from the photos, the bike is in decent shape. Heck, it actually looks REALLY good! Let me just say that I have purchased many classic vehicles (3 cars, a boat, and another motorcycle) on eBay and CL, so I know how deals go down and what to "expect." In other words, I know I can expect to be disappointed if I expect too much!! I will say, however, that the the owner said, "I promise, you're going to be amazed. The bike looks much better than it does in the photos."
He told me that the bike, when he bought it, had sat for some five years (in a garage). He refurb'd the carbs, but admits to basically "bench-syncing" them. He says the bike is takes a few minutes to warm up, smokes a little at first, but then runs really well. The bike has around 22K miles, and I just basically expect I'll need to do a complete overhaul, although the seller swears I'd be wasting my time and that I'll just need to give it a good tune-up. To be honest, I really don't care. I paid less than $1K for it, so I'm not concerned.
The bike is not one of the original colors. I understand that there were two colors offered, but I think there was a third. There was black and candy presto red, but I've also seen a blue version (like a royal blue). Not sure if that was a Canadian color or something like that. Anyway, this bike is blue, and it is a royal blue, but I don't think it's the same. The paint looks really good, either way, but I'm going to paint it either black or CP Red.
The only visible problem is that it's missing the side covers. I've searched this site and found a link, but it proved fruitless. I know Maier Plastics makes replicas, but my question is this: Is the '75-'76 side cover the same as one for the '78? I know '75-'78 CB750F SSs were essentially the same model, but not sure if these parts are identical. Any help on that would be greatly appreciated.
I look forward to hanging around here and learning as much as possible. I've read through a number of threads and am stoked to dig into my bike.
Thanks for reading my long post - sorry!

Welcome. Great story. I love things like this. I'm still wishing I could replace the Honda Z-50 I had when I was a kid.
Anyway, at 22K that bike is not even broken in. These engines are good, for over 100K miles. I do still have the side covers, and most anything else, you might need to fix up the bike. Here are links to the covers on ebay, but I will take $75.00 shipped from a forum member.

Thanks, Pat! Where are you located? It's pretty warm here in Houston, but it seems others are getting hit harder.
TOOLS ~ I've seen those on eBay. $75 for the pair? Also, what does one do about the broken tab?
Do you have the side cover emblems?
Thanks so much!
Ha! You know, I've been looking to get an old '69 CT70, too. But DANG!! I've yet to see either one of those (CT70 or an old Z50) for less than what I payed for this CB!
Y'all will laugh when I tell you that I'm paying for this bike with a healthy collection of quarters I've been saving for a couple years!!!

I am new here too. I got a mostly original 1979 Honda CB750K with 11,000 that I will post tomorrow or when it gets the carbs cleaned and running here soon. I only have $1,000 and the guy at the shop said $200 will have it going so I am stoked.

It's usually hotter than bujeeziss here in Houston, but it hasn't been as bad as usual since we've had a healthy amount of rain and recent months.

I do not have the emblems. There are a few things that can be done about the tab, but what I do is to drill a small hole, and use a ti-wrap. It will also keep it from falling off, or even being stolen.

Thanks, Ribs! I can't believe I got such a great deal. I was looking at one on CL a few months back that was a '76 in "Sulfer Yellow." It looked pretty decent, but the guy was somewhat squirly on the title issue. I could've picked it up for $100 cheaper than this one, but it wasn't in nearly as good a shape and it probably would've ended-up being a stolen bike.
They guy who owned this bike is a Police Officer (detective), so the title is not at all an issue, thankfully!
One thing I think may be a good thing is that the first owner (I'll be the third) had the bike decked-out for touring. In a stereotypical world, I would be inclined to believe that that means the bike wasn't "hot-rodded" much. Could be wrong, but I'm hoping so, anyway.
TOOLS, let me get back with you on the side covers. There's a guy I contacted before I posted who has some aftermarket plastic and I sent him an email. I'll wait to see what he has (not sure if he has 'em in stock or not, yet), and if that falls through, I'll buy yours. I sure appreciate it, amigo!
By the way, does anyone know where to actually get the emblems? I've found a site where you can get the tank decals (at www.knkcycles.com).

Congratulations on your purchase, and welcome. There are some very knowlagable folks on here so just ask away! I ride my 73, 40 miles a day if it's not raining. Has 34,000 miles on the OD, had sit in a run-in barn for 10 years but only uses about half a quart of oil every three weeks or so (I do make use of the chain oiler) so I would say if you break in you motor again (take it easy for 500 miles) you should not have to rebuild the motor unless there is an oil leak around one of the valve seals (and if what the PO said is true that may be an issue). Anyway I am sure you are going to have fun!
