1979 750K barn salvage. pilot jet cleaning

guys,

i have recently aquired the above mentioned bike, and after a little trouble shooting figured out the carbs were plugged.  i have disassembled them removed the primary and secondary jets and soaked and cleaned them, what is the deal with the slow jet?  the shop manual says it is not removable, and  it have sprayed and soaked it repeatedly but how do i know i got it clean before i put the carbs back?

Try poking it with a wire, through the hole.  Then soak it with carb cleaner, and use compressed air to clear it.  Take a 12 GA stranded wire, and separate one of the copper strands, to use as a 'poker'.  Cheers!

ok so i got the carbs back on the bike and it did start and run, may have a vaccum leak though had to idle it up to keep it running and the rpms floated back down after giving it throttle.  so ill investigate possiblilities for vac leaks i guess.

where is the tach signal coming from?  my tach doent seem to be working.

The tach cable screws into the top of the cylinder head, center front (as seated on bike).  Follow the cable down, and you will see where it screws into the engine.  The Clymer book explains to use engine oil to lubricate it.  I pulled mine out, cleaned it with WD-40 (NOT a decent lubricant, no matter what they say, but it will remove grease rather well), and then I applied wheel bearing grease along its length, and re-inserted it into the sleeve, and screwed both ends in place.  Check to make sure the ends are intact:  should be square-shaped ends, on the shafts, to lock into the female receivers, to spin.  Cheers!

i was not able to see daylight throught the slow jet, but i also was not really able to tell where the idle jet came in to the venturi.

Lots of great DOHC carb cleaning info there.  I would highly recommend reading that thread and reading through the instructions on how to clean the carbs in the pdf's and word doc that are linked.

One of the pdf's says to break the bank and clean each carb separately, but I didn't do that and mine are running amazingly well.

Oh, and to check for a vacuum leak spray some wd-40 or starter fluid where you think you have the leak (e.g. the boots) while the engine is running.  If the revs go up, you have a leak.
