The tach cable screws into the top of the cylinder head, center front (as seated on bike). Follow the cable down, and you will see where it screws into the engine. The Clymer book explains to use engine oil to lubricate it. I pulled mine out, cleaned it with WD-40 (NOT a decent lubricant, no matter what they say, but it will remove grease rather well), and then I applied wheel bearing grease along its length, and re-inserted it into the sleeve, and screwed both ends in place. Check to make sure the ends are intact: should be square-shaped ends, on the shafts, to lock into the female receivers, to spin. Cheers!
