1980 CB750K I think.

Hi everyone,

I've read a lot of great posts and am learning about my new bike. I just bought a 1980 CB750K for $1000 Canadian.

It ran GREAT for the month or so I've owned it. Now it's sputtering, popping and stalling. If I hold the throttle at 3000rpm is lets out the odd pop/backfire. I've also noticed increased backfiring when I'm downshifting.

I've got the Clymers and plan on schooling myself on how to get my bike running nice again.

I just thought I'd get the lowdown for you guys on the common problems/maintenance for these bikes. You mind filling me (and any other newbie) on what you think my problem is and what I should plan on doing for maintenance on a regular basis?

Let me start with what I've read so far:

Number one problem seems to be dirty carbs, no?

Well thanks for stopping in y'all.

I guess I should clean those suckers out. I'll start with searching forums on carb rebuild and read my Clymers manual. I hope it's easy.... Those things look pretty wedged in there.

Here is a post you may want to look at. It deals with cleaning the carbs on CV type carbs.

I bought an 1982 CB750K earlier this year, and before I bought it, the previous owner had recently had the carbs synched. Well after a couple rides I noticed the same thing you mentioned, the backfiring when idleing at 3000 and downshifting. I've since changed the oil and that has stopped. I don't know if it's coincidence or what but, maybe you'd want to give that a shot before tearing apart your carbs.

they arent all that bad to take off. you should have an adjustable airbox behind the carbs if it is the same as my 80 750custom. loosen the clamps, loosen the bold on top of the air box and pull it back. gives you about 2 inches of play. slide the carbs right out. hope this helps you out a little bit to not feel intimidated on tackling your carbs.
