Got some pinesol and a bucket - soaking the carbs overnight one at a time along with small parts in a basket.

Managed to break a bolt while torquing to the specified value on the starter clutch cover .  Going to the hardware store to pick up a bunch of new misc. bolts so I can fix this and keep moving in case this happens again.  Thankfully the bolt didn't completely break - I felt it start to go so I was able to back it out before it snapped completely.

Do yourself a favor, and throw that torque wrench away! Just use a 1/4 inch drive ratchet to tighten those 6mm bolts. Anything larger, and you will either break them, or strip the threads.

Ok, I get why I shouldn't use it for the 6mm bolts, but shouldn't I keep it for the larger bolts? Or it just a garbage torque wrench and I need to buy a better quality one?

You know how you said you could ''feel'' the bolt going? Going by feel is best. Since you obviously have ''the touch'' you're good to go.

Interesting, that is the complete opposite of what I would have assumed.  It did feel like I was tightening it too much.  I was trusting the torque wrench accuracy and the number on it and I guess I paid the price.

Side note for anyone in Canada: I picked up new bolts from brafasco - there is one in waterloo.  They were super friendly, also gave me most of the new allen bolts I need for the carbs to replace all of the phillips screws.  By gave, I mean that literally, the volume was so low the guy just let me have them on the house :-).

I still need some o-rings and they pointed me to spaenauer in kitchener.  I'll head over there later this week for everything else.  If they're as good as the guy at brafasco says I'll add them to the parts thread (Brafasco too).

Update - found a fantastic source for any and all o-rings and sockets I could ever want: http://www.spaenaur.com/

They're local to me too .  Not sure if they ship in small quantities, but they have a retail location that you can go to in Kitchener, Ontario where you can pick up as few as 1 o-ring.  I'll probably grab a few extras of each kind just in case some forum members need a new hard to find accelerator pump o-ring or something.

Haven't updated in a while so I thought I'd drop a note.  Almost done putting the carbs back together after a thorough cleaning.  Next up, that leakdown test.

How well did the Pine Sol soak work on those Carburetors? I plan on going that route; starting the disassemble tomorrow. Reading over forums information; just wondering if you are happy with the results. I think I will defiantly go with Hoosier Daddy’s advice on the Randakks kit.

Can't wait to see the rest of your build thread!

It's worked pretty well, although if you have a proper ultrasonic parts cleaner that would probably be better.   Make sure you give the outsides a rough clean first. Pine sol will turn heavy grease buildup on the outside of the carbs to sludge and you don't want that clogging your jets.

HEY! I finally found your thread! Ruby is quite a nice project.
I too have wondered about the Pine-sol trick, I have boiled carbs in lemon juice and distilled water before, that worked pretty well... But I have read a bunch of praises to the Pine-sol so eagar to see how it works for you.
So, I haven't gotten my carb set out to check yet, but you never found that little cotter pin in the linkage? Maybe some versions don't have it.

Oh, and nice save on that bolt!!!

Ya I can't think of anywhere on the carbs where a cotter pin would be needed.

I case you don't pop over to my thread... in between 2 - 3 carbs, I found the cotter pin on the end of that accel pump linkage. It's holding the washer that retains the spring... right next the the idle speed adjustment knob.
Hope these pics help.

Found that pin.

Small updates on my build.

Removed my handlebars, will be buying either some flat bars or club man's shortly.
Built a wood box to hold my engine while I work on it and will be pulling it when my brother drops by this Sunday.

Brother came over on Sunday to help me lift the motor out.  It was lighter than I thought it would be.  Definitely want two people, but if I really had to I could have lifted it myself.  Much safer to do it with two people though, much less likely to tip and drop on your foot.

Wooden box I made to hold it works perfectly.  Wooden pine table easily holds it.  Going to start the teardown tonight.

I'm hoping that I'll just need to replace the head gasket, but I'll be inspecting everything as I go.  I do have a full gasket kit, so I plan on replacing all gaskets that I do get access to.

Did you see where I posted these links to the FSM in the "Repair Manuals" section here recently?

Chaper 6 Cylinder Head/Valve:

And they must have changed something for '81. Here is the addendum for that year. Even though it includes all the amendments to the manual for '81 models, Pages 25-17 / 25-20 pertain to valve adjestment procedures.

Damn, I should have said.  I'll start the engine cleaning tonight.  Did that last night and it took forever.  Only got a few cam holders off, chains slackened, guides removed etc.

BTW, is there a trick to removing the cam holders?  I have one that is really stuck on there.

Pic of the engine now that it's reasonably clean with the teardown just started.
