1982 CB750K transmission main shaft oil seal leak

Sam
CB750K transmissionI'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone has ever changed the transmission main shaft oil seal before.  I have already purchased a new seal (40x62x13) #27 in the picture, but it looks to me as if it needs to be installed from the inside - is that true?  Is it possible to replace it from the outside without pulling everything apart?

I have never changed one on a DOHC, but you should be able to change it by only removing the sprocket.

I'm in the same situation with my 1979 DOHC and need some advice.  I tried installing the seal from the outside and even removed the outer raised lip that fits into the groove in the housing. Still won't go in. I ended up damaging the new seal.

With the Seal #27 in the image, the right way to install it is to remove the engine and open the lower half.  The seal has 2 parts. Driving the seal in can cause the inner seal to separate and not properly contact against the bearing outer race.

I'm heading to a bearing supply store to find a double seal that can be installed from the outside like all other normal seals are done.  My engine is out, just rebuilt the top end, and just don't want to tear open the bottom half.  Yuk.

I bought the original seal before I found out that it needed to be installed from inside the motor.  If I had plans to rebuild the motor, I would probably replace it.  Since I don't, it will not be replaced.
