Pistons rings clearence?

hwille
Hello,

today when I was gonna look the clearance of the gap on my piston rings when I put them in the cylidner it was only 0.35mm. Isn't that a little bit to smal? Air cooled engine gets pretty hot and the rings are going to expand a little bit right?

I've the "RIK" piston rings from cycleone. The Honda manual book says if the clearance is more then 0.7mm(0.028in) they are bad, but there is no recomended value how smal it could be.

Like I said, 0.35 seems a little bit to smal for me:/?
I was thinking of grind them to like 0.45-50mm, to be sure it wont heating pinch?

Hope you understood my question.

Hey, here we go!

Ring end gap should be 0.2-0.4mm. If that's what the factory used I wouldn't go any wider. These engines were obviously reliable as they were engineered, and they never had the reputation for burning oil either. Ring end gap will only widen as the cylinder wears larger and the ring wears thinner with use.

Remember these engines are dry sump, which helps with oil control greatly, but they are also high speed little dudes. Regularly cruising at 5,500-6,000 rpm. I wouldn't go any wider than factory specs for fear of oil consumption.

.35mm is .013 thousandths.

What does the book say they are supposed to be?
If you just guess and the gap is too large it will have a lot of blowby and smoke.
Remember that the ring is expanding but so is the cylinder.

You could call RIK.
