It also had a pre Kong Kong job done on it, and every one gives Kong the credit, for Konging the frame.
It looks like after they customized it, they parked it in the bay.

yeah i dont know who kong is either...my bud saud it was done by a famous painter in san fransisco..ill see if i can get him to send me a pic of it before it got cut up..
|
|
still havnt got any pics yet..but a lil update on this...i cracked open this engine today an found that it has bigger pistons..i think 836..i havnt measured the piston yet but i compared the cylinder wall to my other cylinder(which is a stock 61mm bore) and its about an 8th of an inch bigger...so now im thinking maybe i can get away with doing my rebuild using these big pistons, some new rings, and a fresh bore..does anyone see a problem with reusing old pistons?

She wasn't a fresh bore But thee Ole piston worked great sorry couldn't resist

As long as the pistons are not damaged. Use them.

You can reuse pistons as long as the ring lands are not chipped or worn.
Use the end of a broken piston ring to clean the carbon from the piston ring groove.
NEVER ,NEVER use a wire brush on a piston.
On a Roadstar Adventure.
|
|
what about on just the top?theres alot of crap on the top..anyways..iull just let them soak for a while after i get them off..ill post some pics after i get them cleaned up...they look like fancy pistons..they have some type of plastic cap covering the circlips

You can wire brush the tops without any problems. Just be careful not to touch anywhere that rides on the cylinder wall. And you'll be just fine
|
|
one of the pistons has some small scratches it,not gouges tho.you think that will be a problem?
|
Administrator
|
This post was updated on .
Probably not. If the scratches have raised edges just smooth them down so they dont try to drag on the cylinder walls. A scratch will just fill up with oil and hold it.Not a bad thing. As long as it fits the bore right and can rattle your good. It would have to be a pretty deep gouge to be a big concern.
Its best to have everything 110% when you build a motor, yet it is amazing what they will tolerate.
Looser is always better than too tight. Always.
EDIT: "As long as it fits the bore right and can rattle your good"- supposed to say "not rattle" sorry,my bad.

|
right on..yeah im just trying to save money...if I can get away with not buying new pistons that would be cool.

The correct term, for that "Rattle" is piston slap. And whats wrong with that? The best engines I have ever had had piston slap. All three were 300CI straight six Ford engines. And they all had over 300,000 on them. All were still running strong when I got stupid, and thought I wanted something newer/better. Still see one of them every now, and then.

Piston slap is usually from a piston that is too small for its bore. Sometimes they are just ovaled, which is usually from extreme skirt wear. Yeah, alot of engines do it and live just fine, but it is a sign of a loose slug in a hole. Severe slap can knock a skirt off ( done it! ) or if nothing else,it can cause the rings to oval (from the piston wobbling on the wrist pin ) and cause oil control issues and loss of compression. Severely ovaled rings can wrap around the ring lands if the rocking gets bad enough. We had a 514 cu in Indy headed Mopar 440 that slapped real bad when cold from the cheap forged pistons that came with that kit. The owner of that engine wouldnt let it come up to full op temp before running it and wrapped a few rings up one day. When they wrap,if you are lucky, they will eat your cylinders alive. If not lucky, like that guy with the 514,they will chunk off the top ring land and wedge it nicely in your head. It actually spat on piece of ring thru an intake valve and the carb and it landed on the intake manifold! Crazy! Oh yeah,he never ran an air cleaner either Would I tear an engine down just because of piston slap? NO. Not unless it was puking oil or really losing compression. If the slap start getting a little louder, then yes. That 350 that tossed a shirt tried to warn me it needed attention, but I ignored it.Luckily the skirt just fell in the pan and didnt try to lock up anything.
Alot of forged pistons swell much more than cast do. Which is why most oem's never used many forged piston until somewhat recently. The technology has improved a bunch. EVERY (serious) drag engine I have ever owned slapped pistons (all 8 ) at idle until full warm. Nature of the beast, dont rev it til its ready and good and warm.
Piston slap is not good, but it aint all bad

|
right on..the pistons say"japan" on the inside of the piston and on the out side it says "powroll" and the other side says "10040"...these are strange pistons..they dont have circlips holding the pins in..just some plastic plugs.i still havnt measured them yet.im waiting till i get them cleaned up.im squrting the rings with some pb blaster..some of the rings are stuck and some spin free.
