74 cb750 fork upgrade

ehbontrager
I was wondering if there is a good fork swap that others  have been successsful with for a 74 750.  I am hoping to possibly lower the front  a little and have a little stronger forks.  Possibly stock forks from some other model of Honda, but I am open for suggestions.

Thanks for any help
Eric

The 750 forks are 35mm so if you can find another to slid in, great. Cyclex makes forks that are higher quality than what you got right now. Another option is to get goldwing trees and forks and retro fit them on.

Anything will fit if you're willing to have a set of clamps made.

I have the same bike as yourself. The guy I got it from has the long forks, kinda chopper style. I wanted to make is short and have the line be horizontal instead of inclining.

I found a pair of 77 super sport forks that I am going to put on. Actually, I already did but the caliper assembly did not fit properly. I have to find the right mounting bracket that fits my forks, and/or get a whole new assembly.

Which I now am interested in adding another rotor and braking assembly to make it a duel front disc braking system. I'm not sure if i'm getting ahead of myself or not. I found a guy on ebay that drills holes into your rotor so that it is more effective. Maybe I'll start with that.

If you got 77 F forks(that is what the super sport is designated as) then the fork legs are black and ready for dual calipers.

That is great information to get confirmed! I'm learning as I go and the models/parts that are interchangeable can get quite confusing.

Now let me ask you this...without sounding too ridiculous. There are two sets of holes on my new '77 forks. Where exactly do the calipers mount? On the bottom of the forks with the 2 holes that have a spacing of about 2.5" or 65mm?

Because my '74 caliper & fork is totally different and I want to make sure I am understanding things properly. (below is a pic from last summer)

With 77F (super sport) forks, am i restricted to 77-79 calipers only?

Here is my list of items needed, please correct or inform me as necessary:
master cylinder splitter (to feed both brake lines)
left & right caliper
2nd rotor

SUPER THANKS!

The calipers you should be able to use should run from 77 - 82, at least 80. The later calipers are 2 piston if I remember correctly and so will provide more stopping power. Make sure you couple them with braided brake lines.
You WILL need to use F calipers.
As for the splitter, you can do that or you can get a larger banjo bolt.
the f calipers are mounted towards the bottom and BEHIND the fork.
You should be able to see an F at this url:

Again re-run, awesome. I did some research yesterday and you solidified everything for me. I didn't know I could go to 82 though and that the later ones were stronger. That could make the difference of me going for my newest post, which is connected to the forks: duel brakes

http://www.nabble.com/Rotors%2C-Caplipers%2C-and-Rim-(74k-to-77f)---whats-the-deal-td24608405.html

i found a 2nd rotor that matches my current one. but on my bike there isn't enough meat left to add a 2nd rotor. my obvious first instinct is to just get longer bolts. but my confidence makes me hesitant.

I don't want to keep repeating myself...but super thanks for the info and patience! by the looks of your posts, this forum is grateful you're around.

Most people that do f forks get f rims too but all you should need is longer bolts btu you will want 2 F rotors as the offsets are different from the K I think.

On a related note, does anyone know of a dual-disc SPOKED front hub/wheel for the DOHC bikes?

Woodsrider: It's been mentioned that the easiest way to go duel disc with spoke is to find the front end of a GL1000 (Goldwing - triple tree's and everything). I know that 75-77 are definite years of spoke, but i'm not sure how old/new your bike is and if that would even be an option.

Hope that gives you a lead.

The gl conversion is common if you are dead set on keeping the spoked rims. Just swap the whole front end right down to the trees.

Here's another question and then i promise to drop the whole fork thing until I have resolved my problem.

The forks i have now are longer, by 6". I have the 77f forks. (this much we know)

Can I take apart both sets of forks, use the short tubes from the 77f into the lower forks of my current set up?

This would alleviate a lot of hassle, returning to standard forks, until i can do the duel disc properly. AND i don't have to spend any more cash till i sell my 82 Yamaha XJ550 (which will fund my CB750 aspirations)
