Are these wheels worth saving???

Ryan Sauers
So here I've got both front and rear wheels off my 1980 cb750k project and I am wondering if they are worth trying to clean up or if it would be smarter to just find both in better condition. I was thinking of having them sandblasted and then powder coated but I am worried even after cleaning them up that they will be unsafe/pitted/overall junk. This is my first build so I don't know much (clearly) on what's worth trying to bring back to life and what is past the point of no return. Thank you.

If you could get then sandblasted real cheap it might be worth the expense to inspect them further. Are they just rusty,or are there any areas where the rust is actually peeling or flaking? If it's just rust, they may be useable. If there are any areas that are flaking then I wouldn't use them.JMO.

Maybe go around them with a small screwdriver and dig around in the worst areas.See if you can find any weak spots.

But even if you decide to junk the rims be sure to hold onto the hubs. They are worth good money.

Take few shots (to match) at relacing time,
Then cut (spokes)towards the hub ,
grab one at a time and give a good jurk if all seem great save it ,
BUT if just one is bad THE WHOLE WHEEL IN JUNK smash it

AS Mc.Ribs said save the hubs

They look pretty bad IMO.
Even if you sand or bead blast them ,they will most likely have pitting.I dont think powder coating would hide the pitting.

The hubs are very valuable!

Do not throw those away!

Just cut all the spokes with a bolt cutter.
You would need to re spoke anyway.

Get the rims sandblasted and see how they look.
Then get the rims powder coated if the powder coater thinks they are worth while.

A sand blaster tool is less than $25, at Harbor Freight.  I picked up a gun (link) made for crushed walnuts, but I used baking soda in it:  works great, for really fine blasting; have not tried sand, or crushed walnuts, in the gun, yet.  All it takes is a blasting gun, and an air compressor.  They're handy tools to have, if you have some spare cash.

The spokes definitely need to be removed, and trashed.  The hubs are fine, both front and rear, on visual inspection through the photo's.  The rims would need to be blasted to bare metal, and then carefully examined.  If you have the cash for a blaster, these would make perfect experiments to learn how to handle do it (wear a breather mask!).  I doubt the rims will be salvageable, but they make a perfect training tool.  Cheers!

Thanks for the advice, from the looks of it I'm gonna junk the current spokes and order new ones(good site for spokes?) save the hub's and sandblast the rim's and see how they look and if they're worth saving.
